Most Healthcare Assistant roles are a job. This one is a route in.
Birmingham Hearing Care is a growing private audiology clinic specialising in ear health and wax removal, and we're recruiting a Healthcare Assistant to join the team. You'll be trained from scratch in ear health assessment and clinical support, working alongside experienced audiologists.
For candidates who show the right aptitude and commitment, we will fund the Level 5 Foundation Degree in Hearing Aid Audiology — with the offer made within your first 12 months — the HCPC-approved apprenticeship route to qualifying as a Hearing Aid Dispenser. You'd earn your full salary throughout, pay nothing toward the course, and finish as a registered healthcare professional working under a protected professional title.
We've built this pathway because it's the best way we know to build a clinical team. We're looking for people who want to be in healthcare in ten years' time, not ten months.
What you'll be doing
- Welcoming and preparing patients for ear health appointments, and putting nervous patients at ease
- Assisting audiologists during microsuction and ear wax removal procedures
- Carrying out otoscopy and ear health checks under supervision (full training provided)
- Managing infection control, decontamination and preparation of clinical instruments
- Maintaining accurate patient records on our clinical system
- Handling appointment bookings, patient enquiries and follow-up calls
- Preparing and maintaining consulting rooms, stock and equipment
- Supporting patients with hearing aid care, cleaning and basic troubleshooting
- Travelling between our clinic sites and carrying out home visits to patients who cannot attend clinic
- Contributing to clinical audit, safeguarding and health and safety standards
What we're looking for
Essential
- Genuine warmth with people, particularly older adults and anxious patients
- Clear, patient communication — a lot of our patients don't hear well
- Reliability, discretion and a careful approach to clinical detail
- GCSE Maths and English at grade C/4 or equivalent (required for the apprenticeship route)
- Right to work in the UK
- Full UK driving licence and access to a vehicle (essential — the role covers multiple sites and home visits; mileage paid at 45p per mile)
Desirable
- Previous healthcare experience: HCA, care assistant, support worker, pharmacy or dental assistant, optical assistant, phlebotomist
- Experience with clinical record systems
- An interest in audiology, hearing health or healthcare science
What we offer
- £25,363 per year (approximately £13.01 per hour)
- 28 days annual leave plus bank holidays
- 37.5 hours per week — Monday to Friday, plus 1 Saturday in 4, paid in addition or taken as a day off in lieu at your choice
- Mileage paid at 45p per mile for the first 10,000 miles
- Full structured clinical training from day one
- Funded progression to Level 5 Foundation Degree / Hearing Aid Dispenser apprenticeship
- Mentoring from experienced, HCPC-registered audiologists
- Paid professional registration and CPD once qualified
- Company pension
- Uniform provided
- A small, supportive team where your work is visible and valued
- [Free/subsidised parking] | [Staff hearing care for you and your family]
Interested but unsure if you're qualified? Apply anyway and tell us why you want this. We're hiring for attitude and training for skill.
