Brecon Mountain Railway, Pant, Merthyr Tydfil. CF48 2DD.
Join a historic and scenic railway dedicated to preserving and sharing the rich heritage of mountain railways. Our team is passionate about delivering memorable experiences while maintaining safety and operational excellence along our picturesque route.
Job Summary:
The Brecon Mountain Railway is looking to recruit two part-time Train Guards to join our friendly operational team.
This is a varied, hands-on and safety-critical role at the heart of our railway. Our Guards are responsible not only for the safe operation of passenger trains, but also for helping to ensure every visitor receives a warm welcome and an enjoyable day out.
About the role:
Working as part of the train crew, your duties will include:
- Cleaning and preparing the train before the start of service
- Carrying out the necessary safety checks
- Welcoming passengers and helping them board safely
- Guarding passenger trains throughout the journey
- Providing information and assistance to visitors
- Responding calmly and effectively to any incidents or emergencies
- Cleaning, securing and disposing of the train at the end of the operating day.
You will be one of the main points of contact for our passengers, so excellent customer service and communication skills are essential. At the same time, you must be able to follow procedures carefully, remain alert and keep a calm head if something unexpected happens.
Full training will be provided, including the operational and safety responsibilities required to become a competent Guard.
Hours of work:
We are seeking two people to help provide cover across a seven-day-a-week operation.
Hours will average approximately 28 hours per week, although working patterns will vary according to the timetable and business requirements. Applicants must therefore be flexible and willing to provide additional cover when colleagues are unavailable.
The role will include weekend and bank holiday working, shared fairly through a rota system.
Most work takes place during our main operating season from April to October, with additional work during February half term and our popular Christmas train services.
About you:
We are looking for people who:
- Enjoy meeting and dealing with members of the public
- Provide friendly, confident and professional customer service
- Are reliable, punctual and able to work as part of a close-knit team
- Can follow safety procedures and instructions accurately
- Remain calm and make sensible decisions under pressure
- Are comfortable carrying out practical and physical duties
- Are willing to work outdoors and aboard trains in all weather conditions
- Can work flexibly, including weekends, bank holidays and seasonal events
Previous railway experience is not essential, as full training will be provided. Experience in tourism, hospitality, transport, customer service or another safety-conscious environment would be an advantage.
Why join us?
This is an opportunity to work in one of the most spectacular railway environments in Wales, surrounded by the scenery of the Bannau Brycheiniog National Park.
No two days are quite the same. You will work with historic steam locomotives, meet visitors from around the world and play an important part in creating memorable days out for thousands of passengers.
It is a wonderful working environment — although candidates should be prepared to experience it in sunshine, rain, wind and everything in between!
