To assist with the effective management and progression of medical negligence claims, providing professional and efficient support to clients and the Medical Negligence Department.
The role involves reviewing medical records and evidence, preparing case chronologies, assisting with investigations and expert evidence, drafting legal documentation and correspondence, liaising with clients and third parties, monitoring deadlines and progressing matters in accordance with the Firm’s procedures and professional standards.
The role will be carried out within the individual’s qualification, experience and authority, with appropriate supervision and guidance where required.
Key ResponsibilitiesCase Management
- Manage an allocated caseload of medical negligence matters under appropriate supervision.
- Take and record client instructions accurately.
- Review medical records, clinical documentation and other evidence relevant to the claim.
- Prepare detailed and accurate medical and factual chronologies.
- Identify key events, potential breaches of duty, causation issues and other matters requiring further investigation.
- Review and organise medical records and supporting documentation.
- Identify gaps in evidence and obtain further information where required.
- Assist with assessing the merits and progression of claims.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date case records on the Firm’s case management system.
- Monitor limitation dates, procedural deadlines and other key dates.
- Ensure matters are progressed efficiently and within agreed timescales.
Medical Evidence and Expert Reports
- Assist with identifying appropriate medical experts in consultation with the supervising solicitor.
- Prepare instructions and supporting documentation for medical experts where appropriate.
- Review expert reports and identify matters requiring clarification or further evidence.
- Assist with analysing medical evidence in relation to breach, causation and condition/prognosis.
- Liaise with experts, medical professionals and other relevant parties as required.
- Ensure expert evidence is obtained and progressed within required timescales.
Legal and Medical Research
- Conduct appropriate legal research relevant to individual claims.
- Review relevant clinical guidance and medical information where required to understand the issues arising in a case.
- Assist with identifying relevant legal authorities and procedural requirements.
- Ensure research undertaken is relevant, proportionate and properly recorded on the case file.
Drafting and Litigation Support
- Draft routine correspondence, witness statements, chronologies, schedules and other legal documents as appropriate.
- Assist with preparation of Letters of Claim and responses where appropriate and under supervision.
- Assist with preparing matters for pre-action negotiations, applications, conferences, hearings and trials.
- Prepare or assist with preparing bundles and supporting documentation.
- Liaise with opposing solicitors, insurers, counsel, experts and other relevant parties.
- Assist with complying with court orders, directions and procedural requirements.
- Escalate complex or high-risk issues to the supervising solicitor promptly.
Client Care
- Communicate with clients professionally and sensitively, recognising the nature of medical negligence claims.
- Obtain and record instructions accurately.
- Provide appropriate updates regarding the progress of matters.
- Explain procedural matters and case developments clearly and within the scope of the role.
- Respond to client enquiries within appropriate timescales.
- Manage client expectations appropriately.
- Identify and escalate complaints, concerns or issues requiring supervisory attention.
- Maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive medical and personal information securely.
Compliance and Risk Management
- Comply with the Firm’s policies, procedures and professional standards.
- Comply with applicable SRA requirements and other relevant legal and regulatory obligations.
- Complete or assist with KYC, AML, client due diligence and other compliance requirements where applicable.
- Identify and promptly report potential conflicts of interest, limitation issues, risks and compliance concerns.
- Ensure appropriate supervision is obtained where required.
- Work within the scope of the individual’s qualification, experience and authority.
- Maintain accurate and complete case records.
Financial and Administrative Responsibilities
- Record time accurately and promptly on the Firm’s case management system.
- Assist with billing, costs and financial administration of matters where required.
- Monitor the financial position of matters and escalate costs issues where appropriate.
- Maintain organised electronic and physical case files.
- Assist with file reviews and preparation of matters for closure.
- Ensure outstanding tasks and deadlines are monitored and followed up.
Teamwork and Professional Development
- Work collaboratively with solicitors, legal executives, paralegals and support staff.
- Assist colleagues with case-related matters where appropriate.
- Attend team meetings, training and professional development sessions.
- Maintain and develop knowledge of medical negligence law, procedure and relevant medical issues.
- Keep professional knowledge and skills up to date.
- Contribute positively to the efficiency and development of the Medical Negligence Department.

Pay: £25,450.00-£30,000.00 per year
