We are a UK group company growing our engineering team in our UK-based office. We are looking for a Data Center Electrical Engineer to produce detailed electrical designs, schematics, and specifications for the critical power infrastructure of data centers — from utility intake through to rack-level distribution. The ideal candidate will have strong electrical design skills, a solid understanding of power generation, distribution, and resilient (redundant) power systems, and a working knowledge of UK electrical regulations and data center standards.
Key Responsibilities
Produce detailed, installation-ready electrical drawings, schematics, and specifications for data center power infrastructure, for both manufacturing and site works
Design the critical power chain: MV/LV distribution, transformers, switchgear, UPS systems, standby generators, static transfer switches (STS), PDUs, busway, and remote power panels (RPPs)
Develop resilient, redundant power topologies (N+1, 2N, 2N+1) to meet concurrent-maintainability, fault tolerance, and Uptime Institute Tier objectives
Perform electrical calculations and studies — load schedules, load flow, voltage drop, short-circuit/fault level, protection discrimination (selectivity), arc flash, and earthing and bonding
Specify and size cables, busbars, containment, protective devices, and switchgear with correct ratings, duty, and coordination
Prepare single-line diagrams, wiring and termination diagrams, schematics, and equipment layouts showing connections, ratings, and protection arrangements
Specify UPS, battery systems, generators, and their controls/paralleling, coordinating fuel and cooling requirements with the mechanical team
Specify power monitoring/EPMS, metering, and BMS integration, and support energy-efficiency/PUE targets
Specify earthing, lightning protection, surge protection (SPDs), enclosures, IP ratings, and finishes appropriate to critical and plant-room environments (e.g., galvanised/stainless, outdoor-rated equipment).
Ensure all designs comply with UK standards and regulations (BS 7671 / IET Wiring Regulations, BS EN, IEC, etc.) and applicable data center standards (EN 50600, Uptime Institute Tier, TIA-942, etc.).
Support commissioning (Levels 1–5) and integrated systems testing (IST), and produce O&M and as-built documentation.
Work closely with mechanical, structural, and civil engineers, and coordinate with workshop/manufacturing teams.
Liaise with our Chinese manufacturing partners on production details and specifications
Requirements
Electrical design experience on data centers or other critical/mission-critical facilities—or strong LV/MV power design experience with the aptitude to specialise.
Knowledge of critical power topologies and redundancy (N+1, 2N), UPS, standby generation, and static transfer switching.
Sound knowledge of power distribution, cable and busbar sizing, protection, discrimination, and earthing.
Ability to perform or interpret load, fault-level, arc-flash, and protection-coordination studies.
Experience developing single-line diagrams, schematics, and technical specifications
Working knowledge of UK standards and regulations (BS 7671 / IET Wiring Regulations, BS EN, IEC, etc.), and awareness of data center standards (EN 50600, Uptime Institute, TIA-942, etc.)
Proficiency with CAD and electrical design/analysis software (e.g. AutoCAD Electrical, Revit MEP, ETAP or SKM PowerTools, Amtech/Trimble, DIALux)
Strong attention to detail and accuracy
Strong communication and coordination skills
Mandarin Chinese language skills (spoken and written) strongly preferred, to support coordination with our Chinese manufacturing partners
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree or diploma in Electrical, Electrical & Electronic, or Power Engineering, or a related field
Relevant certification is an advantage (e.g. 18th Edition BS 7671, IET membership, or progress toward IEng/CEng, etc.)
Preferred Experience
5+ years of relevant electrical / power design experience, ideally including data centers or other critical environments
Experience designing resilient electrical systems to UK standards
Exposure to commissioning (L1–L5) and integrated systems testing (IST)
Experience coordinating with mechanical, structural, and civil engineers and with manufacturing teams (experience working with Chinese suppliers an advantage)
Salary: Competitive package based on experience, qualifications, and skillset
Work Location: In person
