Role Overview
The Beam Saw Operative is responsible for accurately processing panel materials in line with manufacturing instructions and downloaded cutting programmes. The role ensures continuous throughput on the Beam Saw, supports wider workshop production, and maintains full compliance with HBJ’s Quality, Health & Safety, Environmental and Chain of Custody procedures. Work on other CNC machines may also be developed.
A flexible, proactive approach is essential, along with a willingness to learn additional machinery and joinery production processes. Forklift experience is preferred to support safe and efficient material movement.
Key Responsibilities
Panel Processing & Machine Operation
- Operate the Beam Saw and associated machinery to produce components to specification. Inspect materials prior to use and assess suitability for the task. Maintain workflow in line with Works Manager priorities and production schedules. Change blades, cutters, and consumables as required (competence matrix applies). Complete daily compressor checks and empty the tank. Never leave running equipment unattended unless authorised.
Quality, Compliance & Documentation
- Follow all Chain of Custody (COC) procedures and ensure correct colour marking of panels. Work in accordance with HBJ’s QHSE policies and support safe working practices. Complete quality control records accurately. Raise NCRs through the works NCR system to support continuous improvement. Strap completed jobs with correct paperwork and prepare for movement to the next stage.
Health & Safety
- Maintain clear safe routes (yellow & red zones) around the workstation. Immediately report any QHSE concerns to the Works Manager or another manager/director. Support the Works Health & Safety Representative in minimising risk and improving conditions. Refuse any task you believe to be unsafe — personal safety and the safety of others is paramount.
Teamwork & Communication
- Liaise with the Works Manager and workshop staff to meet production priorities. Respect and assist colleagues, contributing to a positive and efficient working environment. Follow all instructions from managers and supervisors. Overtime when required.
Material Handling & Movement
- Load and unload delivery vehicles safely. Move materials using forklift and banksman operations (forklift licence preferred). Ensure materials are stored, handled, and issued correctly. Minimise waste and maximise productivity during all handling and processing tasks.
Skills & Experience Required
- Experience with mill or panel-processing machinery advantageous. Forklift driving experience preferred (training can be provided). Ability to work independently without continuous supervision. Basic PC literacy for operating cutting programmes and workshop systems. High attention to detail and accuracy.
