Job Purpose
To safely install, replace, maintain, and remove utility poles and associated infrastructure in support of telecommunications, utilities, or overhead network projects. The Poling Operative is responsible for carrying out work in accordance with company procedures, industry standards, and health and safety requirements to ensure the safe and efficient delivery of projects.
Key Responsibilities
· Install, replace, maintain, and remove utility poles and associated overhead infrastructure in accordance with project specifications and company procedures.
· Carry out excavation, backfilling, and reinstatement works safely and to the required standards
· Operate plant, machinery, and hand tools associated with poling activities, ensuring they are used safely and maintained appropriately
· Assist with lifting and positioning poles using appropriate equipment and safe lifting techniques
· Read and interpret plans, work instructions, and utility drawings to ensure works are completed accurately
· Ensure work sites are set up safely, including the implementation of traffic and pedestrian management where required
· Carry out pre-use checks on equipment, plant, and vehicles and report any defects promptly
· Complete all required documentation, including work records, inspection reports, and risk assessments
· Liaise effectively with supervisors, colleagues, customers, and members of the public to ensure work is completed efficiently and professionally
· Report incidents, accidents, near misses, and any site concerns in accordance with company procedures
· Maintain high standards of housekeeping on site and ensure all work areas are left safe and tidy upon completion of works
Health and Safety
· Take personal responsibility for your own health, safety, and wellbeing, as well as the safety of colleagues, contractors, and members of the public
· Comply with all relevant health and safety legislation, industry regulations, company policies, and approved safe systems of work
· Carry out a Point of Work Risk Assessment before starting any task to ensure that risks are identified, understood, and appropriately controlled
· Report hazards, follow all control measures, use equipment safely, and complete all mandatory training
Qualifications and Experience
· Previous experience in poling installations and operations
· Valid driving licence (Category B as a minimum; higher categories desirable)
· Experience operating plant and equipment relevant to poling activities
· Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and work instructions
· Good understanding of safe digging practices and underground utility avoidance techniques
· Strong teamwork and communication skills
· Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and undertake physically demanding tasks
· Good awareness of health, safety, and environmental requirements
Skills and Attributes
· Relevant utility or telecommunications accreditations (Streetworks, SA006, NPORS and poling PEU craft accreditations)
· Experience working on overhead network (SA001) or fibre infrastructure projects
· First Aid and Manual Handling certification
· Flexible approach to working hours and locations to meet operational requirements
Pay: From £180.00 per day
