The Housing Support Worker is responsible for supporting vulnerable adults living in shared supported housing (HMO) environments. The role combines intensive, person-centred support with practical housing management to help tenants maintain their accommodation, improve their wellbeing, and progress towards greater independence.
Tenants may present with a range of needs, including mental health conditions, physical health needs, substance misuse (drug and alcohol) issues, offending histories, and social exclusion. The post holder will work in a trauma-informed, non-judgemental way to help residents stabilise their lives and move forward positively.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide person-centred, recovery-focused support to residents living in supported housing HMOs, including individuals with mental health needs, physical health conditions, substance misuse issues, and other complex challenges.
- Build positive, professional relationships that promote engagement, independence, and stability within a shared living environment.
- Support residents to develop daily living skills such as budgeting, cooking, cleaning, personal care, and maintaining their rooms and shared spaces.
- Monitor residents’ wellbeing, identify risks or early signs of crisis, and respond appropriately in line with safeguarding and risk management procedures.
- Manage and support safe, respectful shared living by addressing anti-social behaviour, conflict, breaches of house rules, and neighbour complaints.
- Carry out regular property/room inspections.
- Identify, report, and follow up on repairs and maintenance issues.
- Support residents to understand licence agreements, house rules, and their responsibilities within supported accommodation.
- Assist residents with rent payments, benefits claims (including Universal Credit), budgeting, and debt management to help sustain tenancies.
- Work collaboratively with external agencies such as mental health services, substance misuse teams, probation, social services, and local authorities.
- Maintain accurate records, support plans, risk assessments, and incident reports in line with data protection and organisational requirements.
- Support residents with move-on planning and preparation for independent living when appropriate.
Essential
- Experience supporting vulnerable adults in supported housing, homelessness services, or similar settings.
- Understanding of HMO environments and the challenges of shared supported accommodation.
- Knowledge of mental health, substance misuse, safeguarding, and risk management.
- Ability to manage challenging behaviour and conflict calmly and professionally.
- Good understanding of professional boundaries within a residential support setting.
- Strong communication, organisation, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work independently across multiple properties.
- Willingness to work flexibly where/if required.
- Must hold a full driving licence and have access to your own vehicle.
Pay: £21,000.00-£24,000.00 per year
