Lead Groundworker / Machine Operator
Andas Homes — Darley, Harrogate (HG3) Self-employed (CIS) · Competitive day rate.
About us
Andas Homes is a Yorkshire-based developer of bespoke, high-specification family homes. We build stone houses designed around wellbeing and natural light, set carefully into the landscape they occupy. This role is based on our new development in Darley, Harrogate (HG3).
We are a small collective of designers, construction professionals and master craftsmen. Every home is individually designed rather than built to a standard type, so the work is varied and the standard expected is high from the ground up — literally. Groundworks set the accuracy for everything that follows, which is why this is a role we want to fill properly.
The role
We are looking for an experienced Lead Groundworker / Machine Operator to run the groundworks on our residential sites, reporting to the Site Foreman.
You will be hands-on and leading from the front — setting the pace and the standard for a small groundworks gang, working from architects' and engineers' drawings, and taking responsibility for the work being right first time.
What you'll be doing
- Setting out from drawings and working to correct levels
- Excavation and machine operation (360 excavator / dumper)
- Strip footings and foundations
- Drainage — foul and surface water, including inspection chambers and connections
- Simple retaining walls and hard landscaping structures
- Muck away, reduced dig, sub-bases and oversite
- Working to build regulations, warranty provider and engineers' details
- Leading and organising the groundworks gang day to day, and keeping the Site Foreman updated on progress and any issues on the ground
What we're looking for
Essential
- Proven experience in domestic / residential groundworks — new build housing rather than purely civils
- Confident setting out and reading drawings, and working accurately to levels
- Practical experience of strip footings, drainage runs and simple retaining walls
- CPCS or NPORS ticket for machine operation
- Valid CSCS card
- Able to lead a small gang and take ownership of the works
- Reliable, safety-conscious, and takes pride in tidy, accurate work
Desirable
- Experience on bespoke or high-end residential projects
- Own transport (the site is rural — public transport to Darley is limited)
- Additional tickets (dumper, telehandler, confined spaces)
- First Aid and/or SSSTS
What we offer
- Long-term, consistent work on bespoke residential developments
- Competitive day rate, dependent on experience
- Small, well-organised sites with a proper build programme — not chaos
- The chance to work on genuinely interesting homes with a team that cares about the finish
