We're recruiting an HR Advisor to join Bradford Metropolitan District Council's HR & Workforce Advisory & Operations team. This is a specialist advisory role, ideal for candidates with strong employee relations experience, particularly managing complex sickness absence cases.
About the Role
As an HR Advisor, you'll provide dedicated HR support to line managers, focussing on resolving long-term sickness absence cases and reducing the legacy ER backlog. You'll deliver compliant advice across the employee lifecycle, coach managers to handle workforce concerns confidently, and ensure HR policies are applied consistently.
What You'll Be Doing
- Providing specialist HR advice on complex sickness absence, ill-health retirement, phased returns, adjustments, capability, discipline, and grievance cases
- Supporting managers to manage legacy ER cases and enable employees to return to work promptly
- Leading on complex casework, ensuring compliance with employment law, Council policy, and national frameworks (e.g., Green Book, NHS Agenda for Change)
- Preparing high-quality casework correspondence, reports, and bundles, ensuring confidentiality and GDPR compliance
- Liaising with Trade Union representatives to negotiate case-related employment issues
- Coaching managers to build confidence in handling workforce concerns with minimal HR intervention
- Supporting the development of HR policies, processes, and training for leaders and managers
- Building effective relationships with stakeholders across the Council and HR Service Desk colleagues
What We're Looking For
- Proven experience managing complex sickness absence cases
- Strong organisational and relationship management skills
- Extensive experience of strategic HR business partnering across workforce topics
- CIPD qualification or equivalent professional HR qualification (essential)
- Knowledge of employment law, equalities legislation, and HR policy frameworks
- Excellent communication skills – verbal, written, and presentation
- Ability to influence, consult, and advise stakeholders confidently
- Political sensitivity and ability to work productively with elected members and senior colleagues
