We're looking for a part time Payroll Assistant to join our Northwich team and support the delivery of an exceptional payroll service. This is a fantastic opportunity for someone with a few years of payroll experience who is looking to broaden their skills and continue their professional development within a supportive business. Working as part of our payroll team, you'll assist with the processing of weekly, fortnightly, four-weekly and monthly payrolls for a varied portfolio of clients, including sole traders, limited companies and partnerships across a range of sectors. Reporting to the Senior Payroll Manager, you'll also benefit from being part of a wider network of payroll professionals, giving you the opportunity to learn from experienced colleagues, share knowledge and build your expertise in payroll best practice.

Job Purpose
The primary function of this role is to support the accurate and timely delivery of client payroll services. Working as part of the payroll team, you will assist with the preparation and processing of payrolls for a variety of clients, ensuring high levels of accuracy, excellent client service and compliance with payroll legislation. This role provides an excellent opportunity to further develop your payroll knowledge and experience within a supportive and collaborative environment.
Job Responsibilities
- Assist with the processing of payrolls for a portfolio of clients, ensuring information is entered accurately and deadlines are met.
- Support the payroll team with payroll administration activities, including Auto Enrolment and BACS processing.
- Build and maintain positive working relationships with clients through professional and timely communication.
- Assist with responding to payroll queries from clients, colleagues, HMRC and other third-party providers.
- Maintain accurate payroll records and ensure client information is kept up to date.
- Keep up to date with payroll legislation and industry developments through training and ongoing learning.
- Work collaboratively within the payroll team and wider payroll group at Bennettbrooks.
- Proactively identify and escalate payroll issues where appropriate, seeking support to ensure timely resolution.
- Provide excellent customer service and contribute to the continuous improvement of payroll processes.
- Undertake any other duties commensurate with the role.
Requirements
- At least 2 years' experience in a payroll role, ideally within a payroll bureau or accountancy practice environment.
- Good understanding of payroll processes, statutory payments and Auto Enrolment requirements.
- Experience using payroll software. BrightPay experience would be advantageous but is not essential.
- Strong attention to detail with the ability to work accurately and efficiently.
- Good problem-solving skills and the confidence to investigate and resolve routine payroll queries.
- Excellent communication skills with a professional and client-focused approach.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a team while also managing your own workload.
- Strong organisational and time-management skills, with the ability to meet deadlines.
- Positive, proactive attitude and a willingness to learn and develop payroll knowledge.
- Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office, particularly Excel and Outlook.
Contract: Permanent / Part Time (2-3 days per week)
Salary: £26,000 to £30,000 per annum (full-time equivalent) depending on experience. Actual salary will be pro rata, based on your contracted hours
Hours: We're flexible and open to applications from candidates seeking either 15 or 22.5 hours per week, worked over 2 or 3 days. This role could be ideal for someone looking to balance work alongside other commitments while continuing to develop their payroll career.
