We are seeking an experienced Senior Civil Engineer to support ongoing works within a major dockyard environment in Plymouth. This role requires a strong civils background combined with hands-on engineering experience in complex, regulated environments. The successful candidate will play a key role in planning, coordinating, and delivering engineering activities safely and efficiently.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare, review, and manage Risk Assessments and Method Statements (RAMS) to ensure safe execution of works
- Oversee and coordinate civil engineering activities within the dockyard environment
- Provide technical input into design, planning, and execution of civil works
- Ensure compliance with all relevant health, safety, environmental, and quality standards
- Liaise with project managers, contractors, and stakeholders to ensure alignment on project delivery
- Conduct site inspections, audits, and progress reviews
- Support permit-to-work systems and ensure adherence to site safety protocols
- Review engineering drawings, specifications, and documentation
- Identify and mitigate project risks and issues
- Mentor junior engineers and provide technical guidance where required
Requirements
- Degree-qualified in Civil Engineering or a related discipline
- Proven experience in a senior engineering role within heavy civils, infrastructure, or marine environments
- Demonstrable experience producing high-quality RAMS documentation
- Strong understanding of construction health & safety regulations and best practices
- Experience working in high-security or regulated environments (e.g., dockyards, defence, nuclear, or similar) is highly desirable
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills
- Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team
Desirable
- Chartered or working towards chartership (ICE or equivalent)
- Experience in marine or waterfront engineering projects
- Familiarity with permit systems and confined space / high-risk activities
Additional Information
- This role is inside IR35 and will be engaged via an approved umbrella company
- Security clearance may be required or eligibility to obtain it.
