About the Role
Hi, my name is Angela, and I’m a sculptor looking for freelance studio assistants/prop makers to help on an ad hoc basis.
I usually need help 1-2 times a week, depending on studio needs, with each session lasting 4–6 hours. Dates and working hours will be agreed in advance. Please note this is a freelance position with no ongoing contract, with work offered on a per-session basis.
I work with materials including plaster, fabric, resin, clay, wax, silicone, and similar materials. No heavy machinery is involved, though some medium-weight lifting is required when moving materials.
I will start each day with a list of tasks and a timetable to guide you through the session. Training and instruction will be provided, and you will be expected to work efficiently and stay on schedule. A typical session may involve a combination of the following tasks, depending on the needs of the studio that day.
Studio Assistant Duties
- Preparing and cleaning the workspace
- Moving and positioning sculptures, materials, or equipment
- Mixing, preparing, or measuring sculptural materials
- Assisting with mould-making and casting processes
- Cleaning and organising tools and equipment
- Preparing packaging or supports for finished works
- Following directions for sculptural detailing or surface work
- Assisting with body mould-making, including the careful application of materials to the artist’s body when required (the artist will remain clothed)
- Any other reasonable studio tasks requested by the artist
Requirements
Workshop experience is essential. A background in prop-making and experience handling materials such as resin, plaster, and silicone are strongly preferred.
I’m looking for someone who is reliable and punctual, hardworking, able to work efficiently, willing to learn, and comfortable following direction.
Right to work in the UK will be checked.
Applications without a cover letter will not be considered.
Location
Friendly art studio based in N1, London.
Approximately an 8-minute walk from Angel Station and 15 minutes from Highbury & Islington.
Pay
Paid at the London Living Wage, with payment made after each session.
Although this is freelance work, I’m ideally looking for someone interested in developing a longer-term working relationship, as there may be opportunities for continued work.
A longer-term working relationship will depend on reliability, consistency, and a strong work ethic.
