Job Summary
We are recruiting an experienced Registered General Nurse (RGN) to support general medical and surgical wards within an NHS Trust.
The role involves delivering high-quality, patient-centred nursing care to adults with a wide range of medical and surgical conditions. The successful candidate will be confident working within a busy ward environment, undertaking patient assessments, planning and delivering care, monitoring patients' conditions, and working collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.
This is a locum position offering ad hoc shifts, with opportunities for forward planning and regular bookings.
Key Responsibilities
- Assess, plan, implement and evaluate nursing care for patients admitted to general medical and surgical wards.
- Undertake comprehensive patient assessments and develop individualised nursing care plans.
- Monitor, recognise and respond promptly to changes in patients' conditions and clinical deterioration.
- Safely administer medications, intravenous therapies and blood products in line with NHS policies.
- Undertake routine clinical observations and escalate concerns appropriately to senior nurses and medical staff.
- Perform clinical interventions including cannulation, venepuncture, ECGs, wound care, catheterisation and specimen collection as appropriate.
- Support patients with personal care, mobility, nutrition, hydration and activities of daily living.
- Maintain accurate, timely and comprehensive patient records using electronic documentation systems.
- Work collaboratively with doctors, allied health professionals and the wider multidisciplinary team to ensure safe and effective patient care.
- Adhere to infection prevention, safeguarding, clinical governance and NHS policies at all times.
- Support the safe admission, transfer and discharge of patients, including effective communication with patients, relatives and other healthcare professionals.
Essential Requirements
- NMC Registered Nurse (RGN) with a valid PIN.
- Proven experience working within an NHS hospital ward environment.
- Competent in the assessment and management of patients with a range of medical and surgical conditions.
- Experience administering medications, intravenous therapies and other clinical treatments.
- Excellent clinical assessment, communication and documentation skills.
- Ability to work effectively within a busy ward environment and prioritise competing clinical demands.
- Enhanced DBS.
- Right to work in the UK.
Desirable
- Previous NHS medical or surgical ward experience.
- Advanced Life Support (ALS) or Immediate Life Support (ILS) certification.
- Experience caring for acutely unwell or deteriorating patients.
- Experience working across different medical or surgical specialities.
- Experience acting as Nurse in Charge or coordinating shifts.
