Northumberland Zoo is a major animal attraction and wildlife conservation centre in the northeast of England. With the addition of numerous brand-new exhibits in the past few years, our future is looking bright, including several new species over the coming months and years as part of our master plan. We are a family-run, not-for-profit zoo and we are looking for a like-minded team player to join our team; you must be willing to adopt our Zoo ethos and join our mission in conservation, education & sustainability to inspire positive change.
The Café Manager is a full-time year-round 40hr 5 day a week position; which will include weekend and Bank Holiday working; you must have food preparation and management experience along with exceptional visitor service skills.
This is a hands-on position where the manager will be expected to lead by example and work as part of a small busy team.
Main Duties
- Leading the day to day running of our Bear Falls Café; cooking and offering a grab and go lunch and snack menu 7 days a week
- Overseeing the satellite food kiosk located inside the Zoo which is open during high season.
- Responsibility for training, leading and managing the café team to ensure an exceptional visitor service.
- You will organise rotas for your team, manage holiday requests, ensure relevant food hygiene and health and safety training is provided and completed
- Ensure that all daily and weekly food safety documentation is completed, accurate and up to date, including the allergen file and daily food safety checklists
- Undertaking or overseeing stock inventory checks to ensure that ordering is prompt and accurately reflects our requirements
- Managing and delegating the café cleaning schedules
Job Responsibilities
- Ensure that all food safety and H&S requirements are strictly followed
- Assist with recruitment, and training of the café team, including undertaking performance reviews throughout the year
- Delivering excellent customer service to our visitors, adopt a ‘can do’ attitude and have an excellent eye for detail
- Embedding consistency – because the small details matter
- Facilitate positive relationships between the Zoo and its suppliers/vendors
- Make sure that the café is always well presented tidy and organised
- Supports the Directors by performing other duties as assigned
Skills and Experience
- Full driver's license and access to vehicle required due to rural setting of zoo
- Cafe Management: 2 years (required) including experience of food preparation
- A food safety qualification would be desirable
- Ability to interact with and positively influence others to contribute to organizational effectiveness
- Must be people focussed, great with team and customers
- Organised proactive and calm under pressure
- Comfortable taking ownership and continuously improving under pressure
- Capable of working independently with little supervision
- Good written and verbal communication skills are essential
- Must be hands on and be able to do any task that is needed to be performed
