The Role
Autumna is rebuilding its operational team around a Liverpool hub, with a focus on clear accountability, sustainable growth and a positive, high-performing culture.
The HR & People Manager is responsible for owning the day-to-day people function: recruitment, onboarding, employee relations, HR compliance, payroll inputs and manager support.
This is a hands-on generalist role for a capable HR professional who can bring structure, sound judgement and consistency to a fast-moving business. You will work closely with the leadership team, the Finance team, external payroll providers and specialist employment-law advisers where appropriate.
A key immediate priority is recruiting and supporting the Liverpool-based team, establishing effective people processes and helping build a healthy hybrid working culture.
Key Responsibilities
People Operations
- Own the employee lifecycle from recruitment through onboarding, development, performance management, absence, employee relations and offboarding.
- Maintain accurate, confidential employee records and HR systems.
- Ensure contracts, offer letters, policy acknowledgements and HR documentation are issued, stored and kept up to date.
- Maintain and improve practical HR policies, procedures and templates.
- Support managers with fair, consistent and well-documented people decisions.
Recruitment & Liverpool Growth
- Lead recruitment for Liverpool-based roles, working with hiring managers from role definition through to offer and onboarding.
- Build a strong candidate experience and ensure new hires are set up effectively from day one.
- Support the development of the Liverpool office culture and hybrid working model.
- Coordinate onboarding plans, probation processes and new-starter feedback.
Employee Relations & Manager Support
- Act as the first point of contact for employee relations matters, including absence, conduct, capability, grievances and performance concerns.
- Coach managers to handle people matters appropriately, consistently and confidently.
- Escalate complex, high-risk or specialist employment-law matters to the CEO and external advisers as appropriate.
- Support wellbeing, engagement and retention initiatives.
Payroll & Benefits
- Own the HR inputs to payroll, including starters, leavers, contractual changes, sickness, leave, benefits, approved variable pay and payroll queries.
- Prepare and submit monthly payroll information.
- Check payroll outputs against approved employee changes before submitting them to Finance.
- Maintain records of benefits, pensions and employee-related costs.
Culture, Compliance & Reporting
- Help embed a clear, respectful and accountable working culture.
- Produce simple monthly people reporting for leadership, including headcount, recruitment, absence, turnover, probation and employee-relations themes.
- Keep current on UK employment law and HR best practice.
- Support data-protection requests. The Data Protection Officer retains ownership of GDPR compliance and Subject Access Requests.
You’ll Excel in This Role If You:
- CIPD Level 5 qualification, or equivalent practical HR experience.
- Experience in a generalist HR role within a growing business or SME.
- Strong working knowledge of UK employment law and employee-relations practice.
- Confidence managing recruitment, onboarding, HR administration and payroll inputs.
- Sound judgement, discretion and the ability to handle confidential information appropriately.
- Clear written communication and an ability to bring order to complex or fast-moving situations.
- Comfortable working in a hybrid environment, with three days per week in Liverpool city centre.
