We are seeking an Senior Electrical Design Engineer, to join our established team within the Antrim Office, with occasional travel to the London office.
The Role
We are seeking an experienced and motivated engineer to support our Company Directors in the successful delivery of a diverse portfolio of projects. You will play a key role in leading project teams, ensuring effective resource planning, maintaining the highest standards of technical quality and professionalism, and delivering design outputs in line with project programmes and key milestones.
As a senior member of the team, you will work closely with the Leadership Team to develop and mentor engineers through coaching, technical training, and knowledge sharing. You will also help strengthen collaboration between our Belfast and London offices, fostering a connected and high-performing engineering team.
A key aspect of the role is supporting the professional development of graduate and intermediate engineers, providing mentorship and guidance as they progress towards Chartership. You will also represent the practice at client meetings, design team workshops, presentations, and site inspections, building strong relationships with clients and project stakeholders.
The successful candidate will be a confident and accomplished designer with proven technical expertise and leadership capabilities. You will be a proactive self-starter, capable of managing resources effectively to meet project demands while maintaining the highest standards of engineering excellence, innovation, and regulatory compliance. You will thrive in a collaborative environment and contribute positively to the continued growth and success of the wider engineering team.
Skills/Experience:
Educated to degree level in electrical engineering or relevant construction discipline and having gained relevant practical experience in a similar role, you will have demonstrable knowledge and experience of electrical design, particularly in relation of Part L, CIBSE codes, Wiring Regulations and Technical Guidance comfort criteria across a range of building types. Working knowledge of BS 7671, the Building Regulations Approved Documents and Technical Booklets is essential, together with BS 5839 (Fire Detection & Alarm Systems) and BS 5266 (Emergency Lighting). An awareness of the Building Safety Act 2022, the Gateway approval process and dutyholder competence requirements for Higher-Risk Buildings would be a distinct advantage.
You will be required to produce detail design packages of all electrical engineering systems, including but not limited to: -
- Lighting Systems and Controls
- MV/LV distribution system
- Fire, Security & Life Safety Engineering Systems
- ICT & Building Management Systems
- Standby Generation, UPS and secondary power supply systems
- Renewable and Low/Zero Carbon technologies, including Solar PV, EV charging infrastructure and electrical provisions for heat pumps
- Lightning Protection and Earthing systems (BS EN 62305 / I.S. EN 62305)
- Utility infrastructure and connection applications (UK Power Networks / NIE Networks)
For this position you will ideally be Chartered or working towards while maintaining membership of a relevant professional institution (CIBSE / IET), have experience across a wide range of sectors including Residential, Healthcare, Education and Commercial. An understanding of design software packages, Amtech (Trimble ProDesign), Relux, Dialux, AutoCAD and REVIT/BIM would be desirable. Familiarity with Part L compliance, net zero carbon design targets and energy modelling outputs, and an understanding of Designer duties under CDM, would also be advantageous.
Responsibilities:
The main role responsibilities will include:
- Lead and manage multiple technical design packages, managing designer performance and making appropriate technical management responses.
- Full technical responsibility for Electrical Building Services output on projects.
- Responsibility for key client management.
- Provides management, motivation, inspiration, and leadership for other members of the Building Services team
- Plan for effective project implementation, identifying key factors and leading the project’s technical planning process.
- Production of specifications, schedules, calculations, drawings and stage reports in line with RIBA Plan of Work stages.
- Undertake site inspections, produce inspection reports and witness testing/commissioning of electrical installations.
- Review and respond to contractor technical submittals, RFIs and value engineering proposals.
- Support fee proposals, bids and tender submissions, including resource and programme planning.
- Ensure design outputs comply with the Company’s QA procedures and ISO 9001 quality management system.
- Mentor and support graduate engineers through structured professional development and Chartership applications.
