ABOUT US
The Research and Development team (GRAD) support the development of new and emerging marine aids-to-navigation technologies around the coastlines of the UK and Ireland, working with colleagues within Trinity House, Northern Lighthouse Board and Irish Lights. The team is recognised and trusted for its expertise, which is used to develop novel ideas from initial concept through to system development, trials and ultimately working to secure international standardisation.
ABOUT THE ROLE
GRAD is seeking a Research and Innovation Engineer to join our resilient Positioning, Navigation and Timing (PNT) work area. You would work on a range of projects which contribute to providing maritime users with safe and secure sources of PNT. This can include improving situational awareness so that maritime users know the status of navigation systems; making Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) solutions onboard ships as robust as possible; and working to develop complementary positioning systems, providing a multi-layered solution. While our primary aim is to support the provision of marine aids-to-navigation on behalf of the three GLAs of the UK and Ireland, our work supports maritime safety in general, and the team works closely with colleagues across the UK and internationally.
Essential:
1. Degree in engineering, physical sciences, maths, or computer science, or equivalent vocational experience
2. Experience in research and development within an engineering or scientific discipline
3. Practical experience of digital signal processing for communications or navigation systems
4. Programming skills applied in a technical discipline
5. Strong written and verbal communication skills
Desirable:
1. Knowledge of radionavigation systems, such as GNSS, eLoran, radar and R-Mode, and their application in the maritime domain
2. Participation in the development of standards for radionavigation or communications technologies
3. Project management experience including Scrum, Agile and Prince2
4. Associate member of appropriate professional body e.g. IET, RIN
