Job Summary
We are looking for a reliable and practical person to help us with the general maintenance and upkeep of our school.
This is a flexible role, with hours spread throughout the week depending on what needs doing. It would suit someone who is hands-on, able to spot jobs that need attention and happy to turn their hand to a range of general maintenance, DIY and outdoor tasks.
The role will involve helping us keep the school buildings, grounds and vehicles safe, tidy and in good working order. We aren't looking for someone to be an expert in everything – just someone dependable, practical and confident carrying out general maintenance and knowing when a specialist tradesperson is needed.
Typical Duties
The role could include:
- Carrying out general repairs and maintenance around the school.
- Basic DIY jobs such as putting up shelves, noticeboards, hooks and other fixtures.
- Minor repairs to doors, handles, locks, gates, fencing and furniture.
- Touching up paintwork and carrying out small decorating jobs.
- Assembling, moving and repairing furniture and equipment.
- Regularly checking the building and grounds for anything damaged, unsafe or requiring attention.
- Changing light bulbs and carrying out other straightforward maintenance tasks where appropriate.
- Liaising with external contractors where a job requires a qualified tradesperson.
- Keeping the outside areas tidy, including sweeping, clearing leaves and general grounds maintenance.
- Carrying out small repairs to fences, gates and outdoor equipment.
- Helping with seasonal jobs such as preparing the site for winter or tidying outdoor areas during the summer.
- Carrying out routine checks on the school's vehicles, including tyres, lights, oil, screenwash and general condition.
- Keeping vehicles clean and reporting any damage, warning lights or maintenance issues.
- Helping arrange MOTs, servicing or repairs where required.
- Carrying out other small practical jobs around the school as they arise.
What We're Looking For
You don't necessarily need formal maintenance qualifications. More importantly, we're looking for someone who:
- Is practical and confident carrying out general DIY and maintenance tasks.
- Is reliable and able to manage their own workload.
- Can spot potential maintenance or safety issues and deal with or report them.
- Is happy working both indoors and outdoors.
- Takes pride in keeping things safe, tidy and well maintained.
- Understands when a job can be completed safely themselves and when a qualified contractor is required.
- Is comfortable carrying out basic vehicle checks.
- Can work flexibly throughout the week.
- Is friendly and comfortable working within a school environment.
Previous experience in maintenance, caretaking, facilities, building work, grounds maintenance or a similar practical role would be useful, but isn't essential.
As this role involves working within a school, the successful applicant will be required to complete the appropriate safeguarding and pre-employment checks.
Pay: From £15.00 per hour
Expected hours: 6.0 – 24.0 per week
