Some pupils don't need more pressure. They need learning that finally feels possible.
For young people with SEND and SEMH needs, progress often starts with trust, consistency, and teaching that adapts to the individual.
As a School-Based Tutor, you'll work with pupils who may have experienced barriers to learning, helping them rebuild confidence, re-engage with education, and make meaningful academic and personal progress.
Milestone Education is seeking an experienced tutor to join a specialist setting in Sandwell on a full-time basis. This role is ideal for someone who understands that effective teaching is not only about delivering content—it is about creating the conditions in which a young person feels safe enough to learn.
What you'll be doing
- Deliver tailored 1:1 and small-group tuition for pupils with SEND and SEMH needs.
- Plan and adapt learning to reflect individual ability, confidence, and support requirements.
- Help pupils re-engage with education and develop positive learning routines.
- Support academic progress alongside emotional regulation and personal development.
- Use creative, flexible approaches to make learning accessible and relevant.
- Monitor progress and maintain clear records of pupil achievement.
- Work closely with teachers, pastoral teams, and wider support staff.
- Promote safeguarding and pupil wellbeing at all times.
What we're looking for
- Previous experience teaching or tutoring pupils with SEND and SEMH needs.
- Strong understanding of barriers to learning and personalised education.
- Confidence delivering both 1:1 and small-group sessions.
- Excellent behaviour management and relationship-building skills.
- Calm, resilient, and adaptable approach.
- QTS is desirable, although experienced tutors and instructors will also be considered.
- Enhanced DBS on the Update Service or willingness to obtain one.
Desirable Skills & Qualities
- Experience within a SEND school, alternative provision, or specialist setting.
- Background as an Outreach Tutor, Intervention Teacher, Nurture Teacher, or Functional Skills Tutor.
- Knowledge of trauma-informed practice and de-escalation strategies.
- Ability to motivate pupils who may have become disengaged from education.
- Strong planning, assessment, and progress-tracking skills.
