About us
Onwave are a fast-growing digital transformation partner that works within the enterprise infrastructure, construction and engineering sectors both within the UK and overseas, where there is a requirement for access to high-speed networking, cloud, data, IoT and edge computing services that promote improved customer performance.
Onwave business is segmented with a focus on both networking, and software and data solutions for our blue-chip customers, this combination of technologies gives successful candidates a wealth of opportunities to gain knowledge and develop their skills within an exciting working environment.
About the role
- Our customer base is expanding rapidly, so we constantly need to innovate and create new products and solutions which are aligned to our strategy.
- Backend and platform development in Go, building the real-time services that ingest, process and act on telemetry from thousands of GNSS/IoT tracking devices in the field.
- Technical leadership within an agile squad that tackles a variety of problems ranging from IoT hardware and protocol integration, high volume RTK & GPS event processing, to scaling out the Azure and AWS cloud environments.
Your main duties
- Design, develop and deploy the distributed Go services that make up our device platform — real-time ingest, geospatial processing, on-device geofencing, time-series persistence and a real-time web UI — engineered to hold 20,000–30,000 concurrent devices reliably.
- Build safety-relevant, low-latency delivery paths where correctness matters: a geofence breach drives an on-device alert, so a dropped or late message has real-world consequences.
- Work close to the wire — parse and generate binary device protocols (TLV framing, checksums, field-level encoding) and integrate IoT hardware over UDP and TCP.
- Set the direction for the mixed-shore team to devise elegant solutions to strategic business and technical challenges, to maximise quality and return on investment (ROI).
- Act as Subject Matter Expert for Onwave in Go, distributed systems, NATS/JetStream messaging, and our AWS/Azure cloud and Kubernetes environments.
Our Technology
You will work across, and help shape, a modern Go-centric stack:
- Language & runtime: Idiomatic, concurrent Go (goroutines, channels, back-pressure, pprof), following an agreed team style guide with golangci-lint gating every module. Actor-model / supervision-tree services built on the Ergo Framework.
- Messaging & state: NATS / JetStream as the backbone — pub/sub, Key-Value state, Object Store and work queues — with Watermill for message routing.
- Data: PostgreSQL for metadata, TimescaleDB for time-series telemetry, and Tile38 with H3 hexagonal indexing for real-time geospatial and geofencing.
- Web: Server-rendered, real-time interfaces (typed Go templates, HTMX, Server-Sent Events) under a strict Content-Security-Policy, with Azure AD (Entra) authentication.
- Protocols: Bespoke binary device protocols, Teltonika Codec8/8E, and RTK/NTRIP GNSS correction streams.
- Cloud & DevOps: AWS EKS (Kubernetes), Terraform infrastructure-as-code, ECR, S3, and GitHub Actions CI/CD across Azure and AWS.
About you
You should be a passionate developer ready to advance your career, with proven experience designing, developing, and deploying modern software, including DevOps, APIs, microservices, and distributed event-driven systems.
- Strong, production-grade Go experience — comfortable with concurrency, back-pressure, profiling and writing clean, well-tested, review-ready code.
- Experience building distributed / event-driven systems at scale, using a message broker (NATS, Kafka, RabbitMQ or similar), with a sound grasp of eventual consistency, idempotency and reliable delivery.
- Solid database experience with PostgreSQL (time-series stores an advantage), able to reason about query cost and schema trade-offs.
- Comfortable operating in Kubernetes and working with Terraform or equivalent infrastructure-as-code, across AWS and/or Azure.
- Confident reading and implementing binary/wire protocols — bytes, endianness and checksums hold no fear — and integrating IoT hardware.
- A strong debugging instinct for concurrency and distributed-systems problems (races, deadlocks, split-brain, back-pressure).
- A strong sense of accountability and ownership and a desire to deliver quality outcomes through thorough working practices with high standards of work, an eye for detail and accuracy, and an affinity with design issues and the ability to help implement the vision for our solutions.
- Take a proactive approach to work, good with handling uncertainty and can manage their work without close supervision.
- Ability to work autonomously and remotely where required, and experienced working within a team of technical professionals, some of whom will be located overseas.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; able to establish rapport with team members and stakeholders at all levels.
- You should be able to demonstrate that you are a strong team player, who is open to the views of others, values continuous learning and is happy to mentor and tutor others.
- Able to demonstrate applying structured thinking, simplifying complex problems into smaller, more manageable parts, to the resolution of challenges.
- Experience of actor-model / supervision-tree systems (Ergo, Erlang/OTP, Akka or similar), IoT/GNSS/GPS/RTK telemetry, or geospatial platforms highly advantageous.
- Understanding of electronics design, radio and telecommunications highly advantageous.
