The Opportunity
An established automotive manufacturing business is seeking an experienced Die Toolmaker to join its Toolroom team.
This is an excellent opportunity for a skilled tooling professional to support production through the manufacture, maintenance, repair and preparation of tooling within a fast-paced manufacturing environment. The successful candidate will play a key role in ensuring tooling remains production-ready while supporting continuous improvement and maintaining the highest standards of safety, quality and operational performance.
Working as part of a skilled engineering team, you will be responsible for maintaining tooling, supporting engineering changes and contributing to the development of new tooling solutions while ensuring all work is completed to precise engineering standards.
The Role
The successful candidate will be responsible for supporting the day-to-day operation of the Toolroom, ensuring production tooling is maintained to the highest standards and available to support manufacturing requirements.
This is a hands-on engineering role requiring excellent mechanical aptitude, precision workmanship and the ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a busy manufacturing environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Manufacture, prepare, maintain and repair production tooling in line with operational requirements.
- Diagnose tooling faults and implement effective corrective actions.
- Carry out planned preventative maintenance and cleaning of tooling.
- Ensure tooling is safe, compliant and production-ready prior to release.
- Support engineering changes and spare parts management activities.
- Machine, manufacture, prepare and test tooling components.
- Support the manufacture, assembly and validation of prototype tooling where required.
- Verify completed tooling against engineering drawings, specifications and tolerances.
- Assemble and function-test tooling to ensure correct operation.
- Monitor tooling condition throughout production and conduct inspections before tooling removal.
- Accurately record maintenance activities and liaise with Production and Quality teams.
- Support tooling improvements to enhance reliability, performance and quality.
- Assist with continuous improvement initiatives across the Toolroom.
- Ensure clear communication during shift handovers to minimise production disruption.
- Support and train colleagues where required.
- Comply with all Health, Safety and Environmental procedures and company standards.
- Undertake any other reasonable duties required to support the business.
Essential Requirements
- Time-served apprenticeship within a relevant engineering discipline.
- Previous experience working within a Toolroom or manufacturing engineering environment.
- Strong practical hand tool skills.
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings.
- Experience operating Toolroom machinery including:
- Milling machines
- Centre lathes
- Surface grinders
- General workshop equipment
- Experience using precision inspection equipment including:
- Micrometers
- Height gauges
- Verniers
- Precision measuring equipment
- Experience working with overhead cranes.
- Good understanding of preventative maintenance programmes.
- Ability to work to tight engineering tolerances.
- Excellent organisational and communication skills.
- Ability to prioritise workload within a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality.
Desirable Experience
- Automotive tooling experience.
- Die casting tooling maintenance and repair.
- Stamping, press tooling or injection mould tooling experience.
- Jig and fixture manufacture and assembly.
- CNC machining knowledge.
- TIG, MIG or Arc welding experience.
- Understanding of engineering materials including steels and alloys.
- Ability to interpret CMM inspection reports.
- Hydraulic systems maintenance and repair.
- Experience supporting robotic or automated manufacturing environments.
- Knowledge of 5S and Lean Manufacturing principles.
- Continuous Improvement experience.
