Purpose of the Role
To support the design, coordination, and delivery of mechanical building services projects across a range of sectors. The Intermediate Mechanical Designer will be responsible for producing high-quality design documentation, calculations, technical drawings, and coordinated models while ensuring compliance with relevant standards, client requirements, and project specifications.
The role requires a proactive individual capable of working independently on allocated tasks whilst supporting senior engineers and designers in the successful delivery of projects.
Key Responsibilities
Design & Engineering
- Produce mechanical services designs for:
o Heating systems
o Ventilation systems
o Domestic water services
o Above-ground drainage systems
o Air conditioning systems
o Heat pump installations
o Energy-efficient building services solutions
o Mechanical layout drawings
o Schematic drawings
o Coordination drawings
o Builders work drawings
o Installation details
o As-installed documentation
- Undertake engineering calculations including:
o Pipe sizing
o Duct sizing
o Pressure loss calculations
o Plant selections
o Heat loss calculations
o Ventilation calculations
- Assist in equipment selection and preparation of technical schedules.
- Ensure designs comply with:
o Building Regulations
o British Standards
o CIBSE guidance
o BSRIA guidance
o Client specifications
CAD Coordination
- Develop and maintain coordinated 2D models using:
o AutoCAD
- Participate in design coordination meetings.
- Identify and resolve spatial clashes and coordination issues.
- Ensure models and drawings are produced in accordance with company standards.
Project Delivery
o Project Managers
o Contracts Managers
o Site Teams
o External Consultants
o Main Contractors
o Clients
- Support project delivery from design development through construction and handover.
- Assist with technical queries arising from site operations.
- Attend site surveys and inspections as required.
- Support commissioning and handover activities.
Documentation & Quality
- Maintain accurate project records and drawing registers.
- Prepare technical submissions and design reports.
- Review manufacturer information and technical data.
- Ensure all issued drawings and documentation meet company quality standards.
- Assist in compiling operation and maintenance manuals.
Skills & Experience Required
Essential
- Minimum 3-5 years' experience in mechanical building services design.
- Good understanding of HVAC and mechanical building systems.
- Experience using AutoCAD.
- Understanding of Building Regulations and CIBSE guidance.
- Ability to read architectural, structural, and MEP drawings.
- Strong communication and organisational skills.
- Competent use of Microsoft Office applications.
Desirable
- HNC/HND or Degree in Building Services Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent.
- Experience within a design-and-build contractor environment.
- Familiarity with BSRIA and CIBSE calculation methodologies.
- Progress towards EngTech, IEng, or CEng status.
