Coda Octopus designs, manufactures and supports advanced systems and software for the marine survey, construction, defence and security sectors. Our technologies include real-time 3D sonar systems, augmented reality diving systems, inertial navigation systems, GNSS positioning solutions and other high-performance underwater technologies used worldwide.
We are seeking an experienced FPGA Design Engineer to join our Edinburgh-based engineering team on a full-time basis.
The Role
You will play a key role in the design, verification and implementation of FPGA firmware and real-time signal processing solutions for new and existing products. Working within a multidisciplinary engineering team, you will contribute to the development of advanced sonar, navigation and sensing systems, including FPGA, DSP and GPU-accelerated (CUDA) processing technologies.
The successful candidate will be degree qualified (or equivalent) and have a minimum of five years' experience in FPGA firmware development. You will possess strong digital design, verification and hardware debugging skills, together with excellent problem-solving abilities, creativity, integrity and a genuine enthusiasm for technology and learning.
Essential Requirements
- Degree in Electronic Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, Computer Engineering or a related discipline (or equivalent experience)
- Minimum 5 years' FPGA firmware design experience
- Digital systems design and integration
- VHDL and/or Verilog development
- FPGA verification methodologies
- Hardware debugging and fault investigation
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary development team
Desirable Experience
- High-speed ADC/DAC firmware design
- System-level firmware architecture
- Verification frameworks such as OSVVM
- Intel (Altera) FPGA development
- Digital signal processing (DSP), including beamforming and real-time signal processing applications
- Sonar, radar, communications, defence or underwater acoustics applications
- Embedded microcontroller firmware development
- Embedded software development
Key Responsibilities
- Develop FPGA firmware for new products and enhancements to existing products
- Define firmware requirements and architectures
- Design and implement digital communication interfaces including I²C, SPI and UART
- Develop and optimise FPGA-based digital signal processing and beamforming functions where required
- Undertake simulation, verification, integration and hardware testing
- Collaborate with hardware engineers to optimise system performance and reliability
- Investigate and resolve design issues, faults and non-conformances
- Produce design documentation and participate in design reviews
- Maintain version and release control in accordance with ISO 9001 quality standards
- Develop diagnostic and test tools using MATLAB, Python or TCL
- Contribute ideas and technologies for future product development
