Pharmacy Medicine Counter Assistant
Hawick Health Centre pharmacy (HHCC)
£14.05 per hour
9.00am – 6.00pm Mon – Fri (no Saturdays or Sundays)
No pharmacy experience necessary but experience working with the public is preferable
MEDICINE COUNTER ASSISTANT (MCA) Purpose:
- To be the first point of contact for all customers.
- To serve customers appropriately and sensitively.
- To provide the best possible advice and refer them to the pharmacist if appropriate.
Reports to: Manager/pharmacist
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES :
- To ensure that the pharmacy environment is welcoming, clean and professional.
- To greet customers in a professional and friendly manner.
- To accurately complete financial transactions with customers.
- To be working towards or have completed an accredited MCA training course under the guidance of the pharmacist. (counter assistant training course will be provided for the correct candidate)
- To respond to symptoms described by customers by following agreed protocols and using your own knowledge and judgement.
- To know and understand the main features of stocked lines and the benefits/risks to customers.
- To select and recommend suitable products and provide advice on their correct use.
- To provide advice on leading a healthy lifestyle.
- To refer to the pharmacist and other staff when appropriate.
- To receive prescriptions from customers and ensure they reach the dispensary in a timely manner.
- To inform the customer of approximate waiting times and to manage their expectations.
- To ensure the safe and correct transfer of dispensed items to patients.
- To identify medicine related problems or queries and bring these to the attention of the pharmacist.
- To answer queries on the supply and availability of medicines, where it is within your competence.
- To receive stock in accordance with SOPs.
- To ensure the safe and appropriate storage of medicines.
- To assist with stock control and the maintenance of reasonable stock levels within the retail environment.
- To assist with the engagement of patients onto advanced services such as the minor ailments service and New Medicines Service.
- To maintain an up-to-date knowledge of over the counter remedies and minor ailments by reading journals, product information and training resources.
- To assist in providing pharmaceutical care to patients by carrying out reasonable duties as determined by the pharmacist
- To replace stock using a variety of online ordering websites
- To ensure patient confidentiality is maintained in all instances
Personal specification:

- A warm, friendly and professional attitude towards customers.
- An ability to respond to medical queries in a sensitive and professional manner.
- Experience of working in a retail environment (desirable).
- Experience of handling money and maintaining finance records (desirable)
- Clean, tidy and professional appearance
