Job Overview
We are looking for a New Product Development (NPD) Technologist to join our busy NPD team within a fast-paced food supplement contract manufacturing environment.
This is an exciting opportunity for someone with a science or food-related background who is passionate about product development and innovation. Working alongside the NPD team and reporting to the NPD department and senior management, you will support the development of new nutritional supplement products for leading high street brands.
The role will initially focus on preparing product samples from established formulations, maintaining accurate development records and supporting the NPD process. As your knowledge and experience grow, you will have the opportunity to develop formulations, manage your own projects and work directly with customers from concept through to commercial launch.
Responsibilities
- Prepare product development samples by accurately following approved formulations and manufacturing instructions.
- Weigh, blend and prepare prototype products for internal evaluation and customer submissions.
- Maintain accurate formulation records, development documentation and sample logs.
- Assist with researching new ingredients, raw materials and market trends to support product innovation.
- Support the formulation and development of new nutritional supplement products under the guidance of the NPD team.
- Liaise with Procurement to source ingredients and obtain technical information where required.
- Prepare samples for customer evaluation and ensure they are packaged and labelled correctly.
- Maintain the NPD sample area, ensuring equipment and materials are organised and available.
- Assist with updating product specifications, formulation records and technical documentation.
- Support the NPD team with product improvements, reformulations and ingredient substitutions where required.
- Participate in production trials and scale-up activities as experience develops.
- Work closely with Technical, Quality, Purchasing and Production to support successful product launches.
- Keep up to date with new ingredients, market trends and innovations within the nutritional supplement industry.
- Support the wider NPD team with other duties as required.
Qualifications and Experience
Essential
- Degree in Food Science, Nutrition, Chemistry, Pharmaceutical Science or another relevant scientific discipline, or equivalent industry experience.
- Strong attention to detail and the ability to follow formulations and procedures accurately.
- Good organisational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Confident using Microsoft Office, including Excel, Word and Outlook.
- A genuine interest in nutrition, food supplements and new product development.
- Willingness to learn and develop technical formulation knowledge.
Desirable
- Previous experience within food, beverage, pharmaceutical or nutritional supplement manufacturing.
- Experience preparing laboratory, kitchen or pilot plant samples.
- Knowledge of vitamins, minerals, botanicals and nutritional ingredients.
- Understanding of Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP).
- Awareness of food supplement legislation or product development processes.
Desirable
- Degree in Food Technology or a related science subject.
- Level 2 Food Safety or equivalent.
- Basic HACCP or GMP training.
Benefits
- Salary of £25,000–£27,500 depending on experience.
- 26 days annual leave plus bank holidays.
- Please note that 6 days of annual leave must be reserved for the Christmas shutdown period, as the site closes for 2 weeks over Christmas.
- Discretionary annual bonus of up to 10%, subject to company and individual performance.
- Opportunity to develop within a Technical / Quality Assurance role in a food supplement manufacturing environment.
- Training and development provided where required.
Pay: £25,000.00-£27,500.00 per year
