At Cottage Woodcraft Ltd, we preserve the art of true, traditional woodworking. Based in Normanton, our workshop creates high-end, premium bespoke joinery. We do not mass-produce; we craft custom pieces to the highest standards.
We are seeking a truly skilled, time-served Bench Joiner who possesses deep technical knowledge and takes pride in using traditional methods to deliver exceptional work.
You must have proven, hands-on experience independently manufacturing the following from raw timber to final assembly:
- Staircases: Complete mastery of staircase manufacturing, including the initial hand setting out, calculations, strings, treads, risers, and balustrades.
- Windows: Complete production of traditional casement and sliding sash windows (including weights and pulleys or spring balances).
- Doors & Frames: Crafting bespoke external doors & Frames, including panelled, boarded, and heavy-set secure doors using traditional mortise and tenon joints.
- Reception Counters & Fine Joinery: Creating detailed, curved, or complex commercial reception desks, high-end cabinetry, and custom furniture.
Key Responsibilities
- Setting Out & Cutting Lists: Read architectural drawings, set out rods/templates by hand, and produce accurate cutting lists.
- Traditional Craftsmanship: Utilise traditional joinery methods, ensuring all joints are precise, durable, and clean.
- Machinery & Hand Tools: Safely operate standard workshop machinery (spindle moulders, bandsaws, thicknessers) and maintain your own hand tools to a sharp, professional standard.
- Maintain a safe working environment by adhering to health and safety regulations
- Ability to read and interpret technical drawings to produce wooden components accurately
Quality Control: Work to fine tolerances, understanding timber movement and characteristics of various hardwoods and softwoods.
- Strong knowledge of fabrication techniques, assembly processes, and the use of hand tools and wood working machinery.
- Proficiency with power tools including drills, routers, sanders, and saws essential for efficient production.
Essential
- Prior experience working in a joinery workshop settings is essential.Significant, verifiable experience specifically on the bench making stairs, windows, reception counters and doors etc.Mindset:An autonomous worker who needs minimal supervision and values quality.
Training
- Time-served apprenticeship, NVQ Level 2 in Bench Joinery, or equivalent industry experience.
