Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is seeking an experienced and motivated Acute Services Orthoptic Team Leader to join our Orthoptic Department at Bradford Royal Infirmary.
This exciting leadership opportunity is ideal for a skilled Orthoptist looking to take a leading role in developing and coordinating our specialist Stroke and Visual Field Services, whilst supporting paediatric, general ophthalmology and maxillofacial pathways.
You will provide advanced clinical assessment and management, lead service development, supervise and line manage Band 5 Orthoptists, contribute to teaching, audit and research activities, and work closely with multidisciplinary teams across the Trust.

For all orthoptic patients and patients in extended role clinics, such as glaucoma or LVA (if the appropriate qualifications and competencies have been achieved):
Be professionally and legally responsible and accountable for all aspects of care delivered. To ensure a high standard of clinical care for the patients and supervise the acute orthoptic team at BRI to do likewise.
Independently undertake the comprehensive assessment of patients using investigative and analytical skills to form a diagnosis and to formulate individual management and treatment plans.
Use advanced clinical reasoning skills and evidence based practice to review the options for care plans and gain informed consent.
Autonomously carry out the visual assessment of patients following a Stroke who may have significant disability and emotional needs.
Undertake clinical teaching of orthoptics for both undergraduate and graduate students including other disciplines.
Education
To develop evidence based protocols, clinical guidelines and standards for this area of work.
To provide highly specialist advice to orthoptic colleagues, locally, regionally and nationally as required.
Provide appropriate training, teaching and information to staff and carers and other members of the multi-disciplinary team.
To take responsibility for own professional development, maintaining an up to date knowledge of techniques and technology demonstrable by maintaining a CPD portfolio.
To take responsibility for own compliance to the HCPC Statement of Conduct.
To supervise junior staff, support staff, and students as required.
Research
Evaluation of own clinical practice in order to develop appropriate outcome measures for patients following Stroke.
To represent and actively promote the orthoptic service locally and nationally at special interest group meetings.
Lead and co-ordinate audit and clinical governance activities. This will promote the delivery of a high quality and evidence based service.
Responsible for both local and multidisciplinary research in the field of visual Stroke care.
Management
Line manage the Band 5 orthoptists working in the acute orthoptic service for children and adults.
Write reports regarding provision of the orthoptic stroke service and visual field service and develop policies both locally and collaboratively with other agencies.
Ensure systems are in place and reviewed, to collect data and monitor standards of referral.
Compliance with the professional requirements for patient records and the provision of accurate information as required.
