The Role
We are looking for an experienced and motivated Workshop Manager to lead our engineering operation at Consett Depot.
Reporting directly to the Engineering Manager, Head of Engineering and Engineering Director, you will take responsibility for the effective day-to-day management of the workshop and engineering team, ensuring our bus fleet is maintained to the highest standards of safety, reliability, presentation and operational performance.
You will play a key role in leading and developing the engineering team, driving continuous improvement and ensuring vehicles are available to deliver a safe, reliable and high-quality service to our customers.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and manage the day-to-day operation of the engineering workshop.
- Provide effective leadership, supervision and motivation to engineering staff.
- Ensure the fleet is maintained and presented to the highest standards, in line with company requirements and Department for Transport legislation.
- Ensure all engineering activities comply with relevant legislation, regulations, policies and procedures.
- Proactively manage vehicle reliability, identifying trends and implementing action plans to reduce repeat defects and lost mileage.
- Regularly review workshop and engineering practices to identify opportunities for improved efficiency, performance and cost savings.
- Monitor workshop performance and ensure maintenance schedules and engineering standards are consistently achieved.
- Take ownership of engineering issues, making timely and effective decisions to minimise operational disruption.
- Develop a positive culture of teamwork, accountability, safety and continuous improvement within the workshop.
- Support the training, development and performance management of engineering staff.
- Work closely with operational and management teams to ensure engineering priorities support the wider business.
- Maintain a strong customer-focused approach, recognising the importance of safe, clean, reliable and well-presented vehicles.
- Ensure the workshop operates in a safe, professional and efficient manner at all times.
About You
You will be an experienced engineering professional with a proven ability to lead a workshop and motivate a team.
We are looking for someone who can demonstrate:
- Recent engineering supervisory or management experience, preferably within a PCV or HGV environment.
- A proven track record of leading, developing and motivating engineering teams.
- Strong organisational, prioritisation and decision-making skills.
- Excellent problem-solving abilities and a proactive approach to improving vehicle reliability.
- The ability to manage competing priorities in a busy operational environment.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- A commitment to high standards of safety, engineering quality and customer service.
- The confidence and ability to make effective decisions and take ownership of engineering performance.
Essential Requirements
- NVQ Level 3 in a relevant engineering trade.
- Full manual UK driving licence.
- Recent engineering supervisory or management experience is required, particularly within a PCV or HGV fleet environment.
