Retail & Jewellery Assistant – Part-Time
Morgan & French | StamfordTuesday, Wednesday & Saturday | 19.5 hours per week£13.50 per hour
Morgan & French is a well-established personalised jewellery brand creating meaningful, handcrafted jewellery that celebrates the people, pets and moments that matter most.
Please note: this is a new and different vacancy from the Retail, Jewellery & Social Media Assistant role we recently advertised. This position is primarily focused on retail, customer service and the day-to-day running of our Stamford shop, with the opportunity to become involved in some practical jewellery work too. If you applied for our previous vacancy and feel this role may suit you better, you are very welcome to apply again.
We’re looking for a warm, capable and highly organised person to join our small team in Stamford.
This is first and foremost a customer-facing retail role. You’ll help customers choose jewellery, take personalised and bespoke orders, process payments, learn our collections and personalisation options, and make sure the shop runs smoothly and looks beautiful.
However, because we are a jewellery business, there is also the opportunity to become involved in some practical work. Previous jewellery-making, silversmithing, jewellery assembly or jewellery retail experience would be a real advantage, although it isn’t essential and training will be provided.
The Role
A big part of the role is getting to know our jewellery collections and the many different personalisation options we offer. You’ll need to enjoy learning, take accuracy seriously and be comfortable checking information rather than guessing.
Our customers are often choosing jewellery for very meaningful reasons — birthdays, weddings, anniversaries, new babies, memorials and other important moments — so warmth, patience and sensitivity are important.
Once fully trained, you will normally be working independently in the shop on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, so you need to be confident, dependable and comfortable taking responsibility for the day-to-day running of the shop. On Saturdays you’ll work alongside another member of the team.
Alongside the retail side of the role, there may be opportunities to learn or carry out shop-based jewellery tasks such as welded bracelets, jewellery assembly, engraving, hand stamping, polishing and other personalisation work depending on your experience and aptitude.
Key Responsibilities
- Welcoming customers and helping them choose from our jewellery collections
- Providing warm, knowledgeable and unhurried customer service
- Taking personalised and bespoke orders accurately
- Learning our product range, personalisation options and processes
- Taking payments and processing orders
- Responding to customer enquiries in the shop
- Making sure customers receive accurate information and checking anything you are unsure about
- Keeping the shop clean, organised and beautifully presented
- Visual merchandising and refreshing displays
- Stock handling and general shop organisation
- Customer-focused administration
- Making sure orders and customer information are recorded accurately
- Working independently and using your own initiative once fully trained
- Carrying out or learning shop-based jewellery and personalisation tasks where appropriate
- Supporting the wider Morgan & French team where needed
About You
We’d love to hear from you if you are:
- Warm, friendly and naturally confident with customers
- Experienced in retail or customer service
- Reliable, organised and accurate
- Comfortable learning detailed product information
- Patient and sensitive when helping customers making meaningful or emotional purchases
- Confident working independently once fully trained
- Comfortable handling customers, orders, payments and everyday decisions on your own
- Proactive and able to notice what needs doing without always being asked
- Someone who takes pride in presentation and notices the little things
- Happy with the everyday realities of retail, including cleaning, stock and keeping the shop looking its best
- Calm and professional when dealing with questions or problems
- Comfortable carrying out detailed, hands-on work requiring care and fine motor control
- Happy working both independently and as part of a very small team
Previous experience in jewellery making, silversmithing, jewellery assembly or jewellery retail would be particularly welcome. Experience in independent retail, fashion, beauty, gifting, craft or another customer-focused environment would also be useful.
Jewellery-making experience is not essential. What matters most is that you are kind, dependable, switched-on, genuinely enjoy looking after customers and are willing to learn.
