We are seeking to recruit an enthusiastic, motivated and diligent breast trainee at Breast Unit SWB . This post will be a one-year fixed term post in the first instance with the possibility of a further 12 months extension subject to performance and progress. The post would be at ST3/4 level (i.e. 4 years post qualification). The candidates with FRCS, McH qualifications are welcome. This post will provide the opportunity for the post holder to access specialist clinical sessions appropriate to their development needs and participate in clinical work at ST3+ level. The post is mainly based at Birmingham Treatment Centre/ City Health Campus with department of Breast surgery and may have to work at MMUH if needed.
The job plan each week will consist of general middle grade duties on breast clinics and theatres; allowing the successful candidates to maintain their skills in breast and Oncoplastic Surgery. The unit has reputation of successfully training deanery and international training fellows through the ISTP program. There is no on call commitment for the post, but the post holder will be responsible to deal with and be part of any urgent of emergency cases within Breast surgery. The general duties include ward care, Rapid access Breast clinics, and Oncoplastic clinics, follow up clinics, attendance at Multi-disciplinary meetings and operating theatre. There will also be exposure to family history and screening clinics. The fellow will also be encouraged to take part in audits and quality improvements projects within the department.

Key Duties of the Post
1. To collaborate and work to maintain Breast Surgery services in line with strategic requirements.
2. To provide, with the other doctors in the unit , routine and emergency Breast surgery to the Trust, operating a system of mutual out-of-hours cover, and cover for annual, study and professional leave.
3. To liaise with medical staff in other specialties and participate in clinical meetings and postgraduate activities in the Trust.
4. Assessment and initiation of management of patients in the Breast surgery under the supervision of Consultant staff.
5. Prompt assessment of patients referred for admission from Emergency Department and general practitioners.
6. Day to day follow-up of patients under the care of the team.
7. Prompt response to medical emergencies as required.
8. Participation on the relevant out of hours rotas.
9. Attendance at regular ward rounds and multi-disciplinary case conferences with the Consultant and Specialty Trainees.
10. Assistance with outpatient clinics on a regular basis (as necessary).
11. Communication of management plans to nurses and multi-disciplinary team.
12. Communication to General Practitioners of discharges or deaths of their patients.
13. Dictation of discharge summaries to General Practitioners and completion of other discharge forms for hospital data collection.
14. Participation in the Departmental Postgraduate Training Programme.
15. Be involved and participate in teaching of other junior doctors, medical students and nurses.
16. Contribute to audit and administrative duties.
17. Be actively involved in the management of acutely ill medical patients.
18. Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with colleagues in other specialties and participate in regular clinical meetings and other postgraduate activities.
19. Undertake, in exceptional circumstances, to be available for such irregular commitments outside normal rostered duties as are essential for continuity of patient care.
20. To maintain and develop good communications with general practitioners.
21. To participate in research in accordance with priorities agreed within the Clinical Groups and the Trust within available resources.
22. To demonstrate a firm commitment to the principles of clinical governance, including:
§ Developing and maintaining appropriate systems and practice to ensure effective clinical audit in Breast surgery .
§ Attending and contributing to the Trust’s Clinical Governance Programme.
§ Participating in the Trust’s Clinical Incident Reporting system.
§ Developing a programme of personal continuing professional education and development, within available resources and within the workload and priorities of the service, as agreed with the Clinical Director and Group Director.
