Langage Farm is a well-established and growing family-owned dairy manufacturer, supplying high-quality dairy products to many leading national retail chains. We are looking to recruit an enthusiastic and motivated Assistant Production Manager to join our team at our creamery near Plymouth.
The successful candidate will support the Production Manager in the day-to-day running of the production department, helping to lead the production team, maintain high standards of food safety and quality, and drive continuous improvement initiatives. This is an excellent opportunity for someone with supervisory experience who is looking to develop their management skills and progress their career within food manufacturing.
The role involves an average working week of 40 hours. Shifts start at 7am, with finishing times dependent on production schedules. Occasional weekend work may be required.
We are looking for a hands-on individual who is a strong team player, hardworking, and eager to develop both themselves and others. A Level 2 Food Hygiene certificate is desirable but not essential, as full training can be provided for the right candidate.
Production/Daily Core Responsibilities
- Support the Production Manager with the day-to-day coordination of production activities, ensuring production runs efficiently and production targets are achieved.
- Supervise production operations in the absence of the Production Manager, ensuring equipment is operated safely and efficiently.
- Assist with monitoring, maintaining, and reviewing production records, performance data, and downtime reporting to support business KPIs.
- Help coordinate staffing requirements, including shift cover, holidays, and absence management, ensuring adequate production resources are available.
- Ensure production documentation, quality records, and systems are accurately maintained and compliant with company and customer standards.
- Carry out regular safety, hygiene, and GMP audits, promoting a culture of compliance and continuous improvement.
- Support the training, coaching, and development of production team members.
- Assist the production manager with planning and daily scheduling.
- Support the management of employee performance, attendance, and conduct in line with company policies and procedures.
- Promote high standards of food safety, product quality, and health and safety throughout all production activities.
- Assist with developing and maintaining Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and deliver training to production staff.
- Act as a key point of contact for the production team, escalating issues to the Production Manager where appropriate.
Preferred Skills and Experience
- Experience in a production supervisory or team leader role, ideally within food manufacturing.
- Knowledge of production planning and scheduling.
- Strong organisational, planning, and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to work effectively across departments.
- Good understanding of food safety systems, HACCP, and quality management standards.
- Experience leading, motivating, and developing teams.
- Experience maintaining SOPs and delivering training.
- Ability to monitor KPIs and support performance improvements.
- Strong time management skills and attention to detail.
