About the Role
Road infrastructure is built on details that have to work together: measurements, drainage, materials, traffic movement, drawings, site conditions, contractor activity, and deadlines. A small issue identified early can prevent a much larger disruption later.
As a Roads Project Technician, you will support the planning, design, inspection, and delivery of highways and public-realm projects. You will assist engineers with technical drawings, site surveys, project records, contractor coordination, and progress monitoring while helping ensure works are completed to the required specification.
The role balances office-based technical work with time on site. You may spend the morning reviewing drawings and quantities, then visit an active road scheme to record progress, inspect completed work, or confirm measurements before returning to update project documentation.
Key Responsibilities
- Support the planning and delivery of road, footway, drainage, and public-realm projects.
- Assist with preparing technical drawings, layouts, schedules, and project documentation.
- Carry out site measurements, surveys, and condition inspections.
- Record existing road, drainage, footway, and infrastructure conditions.
- Assist engineers with developing practical solutions for repair and improvement works.
- Monitor construction activity against drawings, specifications, and agreed programmes.
- Maintain accurate site records, inspection notes, photographs, and measurement information.
- Liaise with contractors regarding routine technical and site matters.
- Assist with checking quantities and completed works for project records.
- Support preparation of cost estimates and basic project budgets.
- Review traffic-management arrangements associated with planned works.
- Help coordinate temporary road restrictions and access requirements.
- Monitor defects and record items requiring corrective action.
- Assist with drainage investigations and surface-water issues.
- Update CAD drawings and technical information following design or site changes.
- Maintain project trackers covering milestones, inspections, and outstanding actions.
- Support procurement documentation for minor construction and maintenance projects.
- Respond to technical enquiries relating to roads and public infrastructure.
- Assist with project handover and completion documentation.
- Follow relevant construction, road-safety, and site health-and-safety requirements.
What We Are Looking For
- Previous experience in roads, highways, civil engineering, construction, infrastructure, or a technical project environment is preferred.
- HNC, HND, SVQ, diploma, or equivalent qualification in civil engineering, construction, or a related technical discipline would be advantageous.
- Ability to understand engineering drawings and basic construction specifications.
- Experience using AutoCAD or similar technical drawing software would be beneficial.
- Good numerical skills and confidence working with measurements and quantities.
- Ability to maintain accurate site and project records.
- Strong organisational skills and ability to manage multiple project activities.
- Good written and verbal communication skills.
- Understanding of road construction, drainage, surfacing, or public-realm works would be advantageous.
- Experience dealing with contractors or site teams would be beneficial.
- Good working knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Word, and Outlook.
- A valid driving licence is advantageous for regular project-site visits.

You can spot when site conditions do not match expectations, document the issue accurately, and work with engineers and contractors to keep the project moving without losing sight of safety, quality, or specification.
Pay: £41,000.00-£430,000.00 per year
