The role
McCann is looking for an experienced and reliable NDT Structural Testing Operative to join our team working across Liverpool.
The role will involve carrying out Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) and structural condition inspections on highways electrical and street furniture assets, including street lighting columns, illuminated traffic signs, bollards, and other steel highway assets.
The successful candidate will work predominantly outdoors, travelling between sites across Liverpool to inspect assets, undertake structural testing, accurately record results and identify evidence of corrosion, cracking, wall-section loss or other defects that could affect the structural integrity of an asset.
Previous experience within street lighting or highways electrical environments is essential, as operatives will be working on and around electrical street furniture and will need to understand the associated hazards and safe systems of work.
Essential criteria;
Who we are looking for:
- A valid G39 – Electrical Safety in the Planning, Installation, Commissioning and Maintenance of Public Lighting and Other Street Furniture qualification/certificate.
- A valid ECS (Electrotechnical Certification Scheme) card.
- Current Manual Handling training/certification.
- Previous street lighting or highways electrical experience.
- A full UK driving licence, as the role requires travelling between assets and sites throughout Liverpool.
- A good understanding of the hazards associated with working on and around street lighting columns and highways electrical assets.
- The ability to use tablets and electronic systems to accurately capture inspection information, measurements and photographs.
It would be advantageous for candidates to have:
- Previous NDT or structural testing experience within the highways or street lighting sector.
- Awareness, knowledge or training relating to GN22.
- Experience or training in the use of ATOMS or equivalent structural testing/assessment methodologies.
- Experience assessing loss of section, corrosion and structural deterioration in steel lighting columns and other highways assets.
- Experience using eddy-current and ultrasonic testing equipment.
- Previous experience inspecting lighting columns, signposts, illuminated signs, bollards or similar street furniture.
- Experience recording structural inspection results within an asset management or inspection database.
Role and responsibilities;
What your role will include:
- Carrying out NDT structural condition testing of street lighting columns, traffic signs and other highways assets.
- Inspecting steel columns for corrosion, cracking and loss of wall section, including areas at and below ground level.
- Undertaking visual inspections of columns and associated components to identify signs of deterioration, damage or structural defects.
- Using specialist NDT equipment to assess the condition and remaining integrity of highway assets.
- Opening column doors and working around highways electrical equipment in accordance with appropriate electrical safety procedures.
- Taking accurate structural and wall-thickness measurements at specified locations.
- Recording inspection and test results accurately using digital data collection systems and tablets.
- Taking clear photographs of assets, defects, test locations and other relevant details to support inspection records.
- Identifying assets requiring further investigation, repair or other remedial action in accordance with the inspection methodology.
- Ensuring testing equipment is correctly used, checked and maintained.
- Following site-specific risk assessments, method statements and safe systems of work.
- Working independently across Liverpool while maintaining a consistently high standard of inspection and data accuracy.
