Electrical Maintenance engineer
Overview
Reporting to the Engineering Manager, the Electrical Maintenance engineer will form part of the Engineering Department and be responsible for maintaining the site's LV electrical, infrastructure and control systems to the highest standards of safety, reliability and performance.
The role supports the operation of a complex minerals and brick manufacturing facility, including crushing, milling, grinding, conveying, blending, pressing, drying, kiln operations, packing and associated plant infrastructure. The successful candidate will undertake planned preventative maintenance (PPM), reactive maintenance, fault finding, testing and improvement activities across a wide range of electrical and control systems.
A key aspect of the role is to maximise plant availability, reliability and efficiency while ensuring full compliance with statutory regulations, company procedures and BS7671 Wiring Regulations. The post holder will actively contribute to safety improvements, engineering excellence and the continuous improvement culture across site.
Key Responsibilities
Safety, Health, Environment & Quality
- Work safely at all times and comply with all site Health, Safety, Environmental and Quality procedures.
- Support the Company's Cardinal Rules and Safety Culture programme.
- Challenge unsafe acts, behaviours and conditions and actively promote a positive safety culture.
- Participate in risk assessments, permit-to-work systems, lock-off/tag-out (LOTO) procedures and safety audits.
- Report all hazards, near misses and incidents promptly.
Maintenance & Reliability
- Execute planned preventative maintenance activities in accordance with the site maintenance system.
- Diagnose and rectify faults on electrical, electronic, instrumentation and control systems.
- Support the ongoing development of reliability-centred maintenance practices.
- Maintain accurate maintenance records and complete work orders in a timely manner.
- Ensure critical electrical spares are identified, available and appropriately managed.
- Contribute to root cause investigations and implementation of corrective actions to prevent repeat failures.
Electrical & Control Systems
- Maintain and fault-find on:
- Three-phase and single-phase electrical systems.
- PLC-controlled equipment.
- Robot cells
- Variable speed drives (VSDs).
- Instrumentation and process control systems.
- Motor control centres (MCCs).
- Kiln control and combustion support systems.
- Compressors, pumps, conveyors and process machinery.
- Weighing, batching and packing equipment.
- Carry out electrical testing and inspections in accordance with statutory requirements.
- Ensure all electrical installations remain compliant with current regulations and company standards.
Continuous Improvement & Projects
- Support engineering improvement initiatives focused on safety, reliability, productivity and energy efficiency.
- Participate in installation, commissioning and optimisation of new plant and equipment.
- Identify opportunities to reduce downtime, energy consumption and maintenance costs.
- Assist with small-scale capital improvement projects.
- Work closely with production teams to improve overall equipment effectiveness (OEE).
Team Working
- Attend daily and weekly engineering meetings and site briefings.
- Work collaboratively with Production, Compliance, Technical and Engineering teams.
- Support contractors and OEM engineers working on site.
- Share knowledge and contribute to developing engineering best practice across the department.

Qualifications
Essential
- Time-served Electrical Apprenticeship.
- NVQ Level 3, City & Guilds or equivalent qualification in Electrical Engineering.
- 18th Edition Wiring Regulations (BS7671).
- Full UK Driving Licence.
Desirable
- HNC/HND in Electrical Engineering.
- City & Guilds 2391 Inspection and Testing.
- PLC programming and diagnostics experience.
- Variable Speed Drive commissioning and fault-finding.
- IOSH Working Safely or equivalent.
Experience
Essential
- Experience in an industrial manufacturing environment.
- Strong fault-finding skills on electrical plant and machinery.
- Experience maintaining automated production equipment.
- Knowledge of three-phase electrical distribution systems.
- Experience working with PLC-controlled processes.
- Understanding of electrical schematics and technical drawings.
- Experience of permit-to-work systems and safe isolation procedures.
- Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications.
Desirable
- Experience within minerals, quarrying, heavy manufacturing, ceramics, refractories, cement, brick, glass or similar process industries.
- Experience working on kilns, dryers or thermal process equipment.
- Understanding of energy management and efficiency initiatives.
