About Root & Nest
Root & Nest provides thoughtful, practical support to busy families in their homes.
We believe family support should be about more than completing a list of tasks. Our Lifestyle Assistants help create calmer, more organised homes while supporting children through play, learning, everyday routines and meaningful experiences.
From helping with the school run and preparing family meals to organising the home or spending an afternoon planting seeds with the children, our work is varied, practical and centred around the individual needs of each family.
We are now looking for warm, capable and highly organised people to join our growing team of Family Lifestyle Assistants.
The Role
As a Nanny & Household Assistant, you will provide practical day-to-day support to families within their own homes.
This is a varied role combining childcare, household organisation and family lifestyle support.
It may particularly suit someone currently working as a Teaching Assistant, Learning Support Assistant, Nursery Practitioner or within an independent school environment who is looking for a more varied role supporting children and families.
Many of the skills you already use every day are directly transferable.
Building trusted relationships with children.
Communicating professionally with parents.
Managing routines and changing priorities.
Understanding safeguarding and confidentiality.
Creating fun and engaging activities.
Noticing when someone needs support before being asked.
At Root & Nest, you'll use those skills in a more personal environment, supporting individual families and helping everyday family life run more smoothly.
Childcare & Family Support
You may be responsible for:
- Providing warm, attentive and age-appropriate care for children.
- Building positive and trusted relationships with children and their families.
- Planning engaging activities based on children's ages and interests.
- Supporting play, homework and learning.
- Helping children prepare for school, nursery or activities.
- Completing school and nursery runs.
- Supporting children's appointments and extracurricular activities.
- Preparing simple, nutritious meals and snacks.
- Helping maintain children's routines.
- Communicating professionally with parents about the children's day, routines and any concerns.
- Supporting families during busy periods, school holidays or changes to their usual routine.
We encourage our Lifestyle Assistants to use their creativity and experience when planning activities.
A rainy afternoon does not always have to mean television.
It might mean baking.
Building a den.
Starting a craft project.
Reading together.
Or pulling on a pair of wellies and heading into the garden.
Kitchen Gardens & Outdoor Learning
Kitchen gardens are an important part of the Root & Nest approach.
Where a family has a garden, vegetable patch or growing space, Lifestyle Assistants may help families care for and enjoy it.
This could include:
- Planting seeds with children.
- Watering and caring for vegetables, herbs and fruit.
- Harvesting produce.
- Planning simple seasonal growing activities.
- Helping children learn where food comes from.
- Using home-grown produce in simple meals or baking activities.
- Creating outdoor activities around nature and the seasons.
- Encouraging children to spend meaningful time outdoors.
You do not need to be an experienced gardener.
We are looking for people who are willing to learn and who can turn everyday activities into opportunities for children to explore and develop.
Planting a sunflower can become a lesson in measuring.
Growing peas can start a conversation about where food comes from.
Picking strawberries can become an afternoon activity.
Making lunch with something a child has grown themselves can create a memory.
At Root & Nest, we believe learning does not only happen in a classroom.
Household Support
Alongside childcare, you will help families maintain a calm, organised and welcoming home.
Tasks may include:
- Light cleaning and general household upkeep.
- Laundry, folding and organising clothing.
- Changing beds and refreshing children's rooms.
- Keeping play areas and shared family spaces organised.
- Preparing simple family meals.
- Household shopping and occasional errands.
- Keeping track of household essentials.
- Helping organise cupboards, children's belongings and family spaces.
- Supporting household routines and schedules.
- Coordinating with cleaners, gardeners or other household service providers where required.
- Identifying practical ways to make everyday family life easier.
This is a hands-on role.
We are looking for people who are comfortable noticing that the washing needs folding, the children's bags need preparing for tomorrow or the kitchen is running low on essentials — and confidently taking appropriate action.
What We're Looking For
We are looking for people who are:
- Warm, caring and naturally confident with children.
- Highly organised and practical.
- Professional when communicating with parents and families.
- Discreet and respectful of family privacy.
- Reliable, punctual and dependable.
- Comfortable working independently.
- Able to use initiative and make sensible day-to-day decisions.
- Calm when plans or priorities change.
- Happy completing everyday household tasks.
- Creative when planning activities for children.
- Interested in outdoor learning, food, growing or family wellbeing.
- Comfortable using smartphones, email, calendars and basic digital tools.
Experience within an independent school, private nursery, education, childcare, family support, nannying or private household environment is particularly welcomed.
A Natural Next Step from Education
If you currently work as a Teaching Assistant or Learning Support Assistant, you may already have many of the skills we're looking for.
You understand children.
You know how to create engaging activities.
You can communicate professionally with parents.
You're familiar with safeguarding and confidentiality.
You can manage competing priorities.
And you're probably very good at noticing what needs doing before someone asks.

For the right person, this can be a natural next step from education into professional family support.
If you're organised, practical, naturally good with children and enjoy being the person who helps everything feel a little calmer and more manageable, we'd love to hear from you.
