Thompson Commercials is the largest privately owned Renault Trucks dealership in the UK, with eight depots spanning the East of England. We supply the full range of new Renault and Isuzu trucks, alongside pre-owned trucks, trailers and vans.

We are now seeking a Workshop Controller to join our Sheffield depot and become an important part of the team as we enter this exciting new chapter.
The Role
As Workshop Controller, you will be responsible for the smooth, safe and efficient day-to-day running of the workshop.
You will plan and allocate incoming work to our Vehicle Technicians and Apprentices, coordinate closely with the Service and Parts Departments, and ensure work is completed to the highest possible standard while maintaining productivity and efficiency.
You will also provide day-to-day leadership to Shift Leaders, Technicians and Apprentices, helping to develop the team and ensure we consistently deliver an excellent service to our customers.
Key Responsibilities
- Plan and allocate workshop jobs to Technicians and Apprentices, taking account of individual skills, experience, workload and available resources.
- Ensure all work is carried out in accordance with manufacturer requirements and warranty standards, with all relevant documentation completed accurately.
- Monitor workshop workflow and productivity to ensure jobs are completed efficiently, accurately and on time.
- Manage customer expectations by ensuring delays, additional work or other issues are identified and communicated promptly.
- Work closely with the Parts Department to maximise parts availability and minimise unnecessary workshop delays.
- Lead, motivate, coach and develop the workshop team to achieve daily, weekly and monthly objectives.
- Identify problems arising during repairs or maintenance, escalating where necessary and ensuring appropriate action is taken.
- Keep the Service Manager and Depot Manager informed of workshop progress and the status of outstanding or unfinished jobs.
- Carry out and oversee routine workshop equipment and maintenance checks.
- Maintain a high level of technical competence through continuous professional development, manufacturer training and technical updates.
- Maintain the highest standards of professionalism, workmanship and customer service at all times.
- Support management with the introduction of new processes and working methods designed to improve workshop efficiency and performance.
- Ensure workshop tools, equipment and materials are properly maintained, stored and safeguarded, reporting any defects promptly.
- Ensure all work is carried out in accordance with Thompson Commercials' Health & Safety Policy, procedures and guidelines, promoting a strong safety culture throughout the workshop.
- Undertake other reasonable duties appropriate to the position and level of responsibility.

What We're Looking For
To succeed in this role, you will ideally have:
- Previous supervisory or workshop control experience, preferably within a commercial vehicle environment
- Knowledge and experience of working with a Dealer Management System (DMS)
- Good basic IT skills
- Strong leadership and communication skills
- Excellent planning and organisational abilities
- A practical, solutions-focused approach to problem solving
- An HGV licence
- A full driving licence
