Job Title: St Giles' Cathedral Beadle
Department/Team: Beadle Department
Reporting To: Head Beadle
Main Purpose of Job
- To maintain the decorum and security of the building, ensuring the health and safety of all staff, users and visitors.
- To prepare the church and assist ministers before, during and after services.
- To provide a welcoming face and presence for all people who use the Cathedral.
- To provide support with arrangements for events in the Cathedral.
- To undertake cleaning and maintenance activities.
Main Responsibilities
- Beadle duties are mainly contained within the Cathedral building. The role is active, with a high degree of visibility around the building.
- Beadles will assist and liaise closely with other members of staff, including Heritage and Culture, Shop, Master of the Music and Assistant Organist.
Specific Tasks
Services of Worship
- Prepare the Cathedral and assist ministers with the liturgical requirements before, during and after services.
- Prepare the communion elements for Holy Communion.
- Change falls, banners and cloths according to liturgical season.
Health and Safety
- Opening and closing of the Cathedral at all required times.
- Responsibility for the safety of the building and all staff and visitors in the event of fire or other emergency events.
- Maintain satisfactory level of heating and lighting for services of worship and other events on instruction from the Master of the Music and/or Head of Heritage and Culture.
- Attend to accidents or incidents and complete the relevant statutory reports.
- Maintain and check Fire Assessment System.
- Undertake, supervise and record all equipment or systems maintenance and annual checks in line with statutory requirements.
- Report any building defects to the Head Beadle.
Events and General Visiting
- Deal with visitor enquiries as appropriate.
- Assist with maintaining a staff presence in the Thistle Chapel and at the Welcome Desk on occasion.
- Liaise with and assist the Head of Heritage and Culture and/or the Master of the Music with concerts or any other events.
- Reconfigure the seating layout as required for services, concerts, meetings or other events in the Cathedral.
- Liaise with outside bodies for any special services or events as required.
Security
- Issue and maintain the register of keys as required.
- Responsible for intruder alarms and the issuing of security codes and fobs.
- Be on call as needed for alarm company (currently Chubb) and Police Scotland on any security matters.
Routine Maintenance and Supplies
- Support and empty donation boxes on request from Finance Manager.
- Receive and record lost property.
- Maintain and set all clocks and timers for external floodlights.
- Collect and deliver all laundry and dry cleaning.
- Maintain supply of communion bread, wine, candles plus electrical fittings and other necessary equipment.
- Clear votive stands and replenish candles. Trim candles and replace when necessary.
- Operate and maintain sound and CCTV systems as required, including any battery replacement.
- Check altar linen, polish silver and water church flowers ahead of services.
- Maintain general tidiness and cleanliness of church and put out recycling and rubbish for collection as agreed by City Council or private contractors.
- Replenish leaflets, welcome cards and gift aid envelopes.
- Collect and distribute mail and any deliveries.
Any other tasks required and agreed by your line manager.
Working Hours and Pay
Shift pattern to be confirmed.
Salary of £26,437.28
Person Specification: Knowledge, Skills and Experience
- Ability to work unsupervised.
- Ability to work as a team player.
- Good people and communication skills, with ability to relate to people of diverse backgrounds.
- Basic computer literacy.
- Ability to take initiative and make decisions as required.
