Job Summary
An opportunity has arisen for a committed and knowledgeable plantsperson to manage a garden on a private small country estate near Windermere, Cumbria, designed and completed in 1912 by H Avray Tipping. The estate has been in the family for many generations.
The 7 acre garden includes a formal sunken garden with double herbaceous borders, a rose garden, croquet lawn, kitchen garden, a yew maze, formal hedging, a bog garden, a woodland garden, a wildflower garden.
The suitable candidate will work closely with the owners to agree future planting, projects etc and will have the relevant horticultural qualifications such as RHS level 3 or similar and and a minimum of 3 years experience working in a public or private garden.
SALARY: Dependant on Experience
Holidays: 28 Days.
A RENT FREE THREE BEDROOM COTTAGE WILL BE AVAILABLE TO THE SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATE.
Responsibilities
- The suitable candidate will work closely with the owners to agree future planting, projects etc.
- Skills and duties include:
- An interest in historical gardens
- Experience of cultivating and pruning roses
- Ability to plan and prioritise tasks and manage the garden on a day to day basis.
- Manage up to 2 assistant gardeners and liaise with and manage external contractors as required.
- Maintain accurate records and garden plans.
- Be a keen plantsperson with excellent plant knowledge and a keen eye for detail.
- Be able to care for large herbaceous borders
- Experience in hedge cutting and topiary
- Working knowledge of soil management and organic practices
- Look after and ensure timely servicing of all garden machinery (mostly battery operated).
- Knowledge of first aid would be helpful
Qualifications
- Will have the relevant horticultural qualifications such as RHS level 3 or similar.
- A minimum of 3 years experience working in a public or private garden. Proven experience in gardening, horticulture, or landscape maintenance with a strong background in groundskeeping.
- Hands-on expertise with hand tools, power tools, irrigation systems, and gardening machinery.
- Growing experience with various plants, shrubs, trees, and flowers essential for landscape success.
- Knowledge of horticultural principles including soil health, pest control, pruning techniques, and plant care.
- Ability to lead a team effectively while managing multiple projects simultaneously.
- Strong communication skills combined with a proactive attitude toward problem-solving.
