Salary: £27,257 - £29,850 (pro-rata for part-time)
Hours: 28.8 per week
As an Archive Assistant, you will provide access, manage and promote the nearly 900-year-old historic collections of Edinburgh City Archives. You will do this by providing excellent customer service, facilitating public access, undertaking preservation activities, and supporting outreach work. The role combines supporting researchers in an archives searchroom environment with working in a warehouse environment to catalogue and manage collections in line with professional archival standards.
Join the Records & Archives team and help preserve and make accessible the rich archival heritage of Scotland’s capital. As an Archive Assistant, you will play a important role in supporting the delivery and development of the Council’s archive service, Edinburgh City Archives, providing excellent customer service to researchers, residents and colleagues while helping to care for and maintain historic collections. You will contribute to ensuring that archives are preserved and made available in line with professional standards, Council priorities and national guidance.
This is a varied and rewarding role that combines frontline customer support with collections care, outreach and heritage engagement. You will assist researchers using the City Archives, respond to enquiries, support cataloguing and preservation assessments while also helping to deliver exhibitions, events and educational activities that promote the our collections to a wide range of audiences. The post also offers opportunities to support our digital archive repository through the taking in of digital archive collections.
We are looking for an enthusiastic and adaptable individual with strong communication, customer service and organisational skills. The successful candidate will enjoy working with people as much as with historic records and will be comfortable balancing a range of responsibilities across the public searchroom, archive stores and outreach settings. The role requires initiative, attention to detail and a commitment to preserving archival collections, while contributing positively to a collaborative team dedicated to protecting and sharing Edinburgh’s nearly 900 years of archival heritage for current and future generations.
This position is subject to Standard Disclosure check. Where an individual has spent a continuous period of 3 months or more out with the UK in the last 5 years, an Overseas Criminal Record Check will be required. You will be required to provide this check. An unconditional offer of employment and commencement in the post will be subject to the outcome of both these pre-employment checks being deemed satisfactory.

Our salary range typically reflects the initial starting salary and annually increases until it reaches the top of the range.
