Job Summary
The Maintenance Operative will be responsible for carrying out a broad range of planned and reactive maintenance tasks across the Sherborne Schools Group estate. Working closely with the Head of Estates and wider Facilities team, the postholder will help ensure that all school buildings, facilities and grounds are maintained to a high standard, providing safe, functional and welcoming environments for pupils, staff and visitors.
This is a varied, hands-on role requiring practical skills, a proactive approach and a commitment to delivering excellent customer service. The successful candidate will undertake general repairs, support facilities operations and contribute to the effective day-to-day running of the Schools' estate across multiple sites.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
- Carry out a wide range of planned and reactive maintenance tasks across Sherborne Schools Group properties, including minor joinery, plumbing, decorating and general building repairs.
- Undertake routine repairs such as replacing lamps and lighting tubes, repairing doors, locks, handles and furniture, changing tap washers and making good damaged surfaces.
- Assist with the upkeep of external areas, including clearing gutters and drains, litter picking, sweeping and ensuring pathways remain safe and free from hazards.
- Liaise with the General Trades Supervisor to plan, prioritise and complete maintenance activities efficiently.
- Respond promptly to maintenance requests and support the delivery of planned preventative maintenance programmes.
- Inspect reported issues, assess repair requirements and complete works where possible during the initial visit.
- Report and escalate more complex maintenance issues, ensuring timely follow-up and resolution.
- Maintain accurate records relating to work orders, inspections, materials used, hours worked and risk assessments.
- Use communication systems effectively and maintain regular contact with the Estates and Facilities team.
- Monitor stock levels and request materials, tools and equipment as required.
- Work collaboratively with colleagues, contractors and other departments to ensure the efficient delivery of maintenance services across all Group sites.
- Provide support with porterage, facilities and site operational duties as required.
- Attend training and development activities to maintain professional skills and ensure compliance with statutory requirements.
- Respond to daytime fire alarm activations and assist with emergency procedures when required.
- Ensure all work is carried out in accordance with Health and Safety legislation, policies and safe working practices.
- Report any maintenance, health and safety or safeguarding concerns through the appropriate channels.
- Promote and safeguard the welfare of children and young people in accordance with the Group's safeguarding policies and procedures.
- Undertake any other duties commensurate with the nature and level of the post as reasonably required.
Pay: £26,520.00 per year
