Biosciences is one of the largest Divisions within UCL with 600 staff and 2040 undergraduate and postgraduate taught students, and a leading centre for research and teaching in the biological sciences. It brings together one of the UK’s largest and most diverse life sciences communities, with strong integration across experimental, field, and computational approaches. Research spans evolutionary and population genetics, ecology and the environment, cell and developmental biology, computational biology, neuroscience, and structural and molecular biology. This work is supported by advanced scientific infrastructure and platforms (including light, electron and cryoEM microscopy, NMR, mass spectrometry, molecular biology and genomics) and a large community of 350 postgraduate research students integrated within doctoral research programmes.
This is an exciting opportunity to join the Biosciences team as part of the technical team.
The main purpose of this position is to monitor and review the department‘s arrangements for safe working within and at containment level 3 and to have the day-to-day responsibility of ensuring good practice is followed by all Authorized Users. Contractors or visitors to the CL3 suite
The main duties and responsibilities are to provide technical and administrative advice on the processes and procedures in place at UCL that requires Containment level 3 (CL3) controls and regular updates (at least annually or more frequently if required) to the Biosciences Divisional Manager on all projects requiring CL3 controls currently taking place within the Division.
This is a fixed-term role until 30 September 2027

You must have a Biosafety level 1 qualification or relevant subject area and proven knowledge of why and when work is required to be carried out CL3. You will also be experienced in the legal requirements for working at CL3 (requirements for Codes of practice, risk assessment including significant changes etc); Fumigation requirements (when, why and ability to decide how) and the requirements and processes for waste disposal including non-standard waste.
Understanding additional requirements such as biosecurity based on the biological agents stored or used in the CL3 is also required.
Experience in Roles and responsibilities with in a CL3 suite (general and UCL) is also essential.
