Lead Transport Operations in a Safety-Critical Dangerous Goods Environment
Our client is a well-established organisation operating within a highly regulated, safety-critical industry. Due to continued growth, they are seeking an experienced Transport Manager to take full responsibility for transport operations, including the safe and compliant movement of dangerous goods/hazardous goods, across the Northern Region.
This is a confidential appointment offering the opportunity to lead a multi-site transport function where compliance, operational excellence and strong leadership are paramount. You'll play a key role in ensuring transport operations are delivered safely, legally and efficiently whilst driving continuous improvement, supporting business growth, and maintaining the highest standards of compliance for dangerous goods/hazardous goods transport.
The Role
Reporting to the Business Area Manager, you will be responsible for the strategic and operational management of regional transport activities, ensuring the highest standards of legal compliance, fleet performance and customer service, with a strong focus on the safe transportation of dangerous goods/hazardous goods.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and manage transport operations across multiple locations throughout the Northern Region.
- Ensure the safe, legal and compliant transportation of dangerous goods/hazardous goods in accordance with ADR regulations, company procedures and customer requirements.
- Act as the nominated Transport Manager for the Operator Licence (where applicable).
- Ensure full compliance with Operator Licence undertakings, DVSA regulations, ADR requirements for dangerous goods/hazardous goods, and all relevant transport legislation.
- Manage Drivers' Hours, Working Time Regulations, Digital Tachographs and Driver CPC compliance.
- Oversee vehicle maintenance programmes, fleet availability and vehicle replacement planning, ensuring vehicles used for dangerous goods transport remain fully compliant.
- Monitor fleet utilisation, fuel performance and operational KPIs to maximise efficiency.
- Manage regional transport budgets, supplier expenditure and cost-saving initiatives.
- Lead, coach and develop Transport Supervisors, Team Leaders and Drivers, promoting best practice in dangerous goods/hazardous goods transport.
- Promote a proactive safety culture and ensure compliance with Health & Safety legislation and ADR requirements.
- Lead accident investigations, root cause analysis and corrective actions, including incidents involving dangerous goods/hazardous goods where applicable.
- Build strong relationships with customers, suppliers, regulatory bodies and internal stakeholders.
- Drive continuous improvement, operational efficiency and sustainability initiatives.
About You
You'll be an experienced Transport Manager with a strong background in dangerous goods/hazardous goods transport operations, who thrives in a highly regulated operational environment and enjoys leading teams to deliver exceptional standards of safety, compliance and service.
Essential Requirements
- National CPC (Certificate of Professional Competence) in Road Haulage.
- Full UK Driving Licence.
- ADR Certificate covering the transportation of dangerous goods (including Class 1, 5.1, 8 and 9 where applicable).
- Significant experience managing dangerous goods/hazardous goods transport operations within a highly regulated industry.
- Strong knowledge of:

- Experience managing transport budgets and operational performance.

- Strong analytical, planning and problem-solving abilities.
- High level of IT literacy, including Microsoft Office and Transport Management Systems.
- Must live within a 30-minute commute of Alfreton.
