The SEN Tutor will deliver high-quality, engaging and personalised teaching to learners with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), enabling them to achieve their educational outcomes while developing the confidence, independence and life skills needed for adulthood.
The successful candidate will build positive relationships with learners, families and professionals while creating a safe, inclusive and supportive learning environment where every learner can succeed.
Key ResponsibilitiesTeaching and Learning
- Plan and deliver engaging lessons tailored to individual learner needs.
- Differentiate teaching to meet a range of learning needs and abilities.
- Deliver accredited vocational qualifications alongside Functional Skills English and Maths where appropriate.
- Adapt teaching strategies to support learners with autism, ADHD, SEMH, speech and language needs and moderate learning difficulties.
- Develop learners' confidence, independence and resilience.
- Use a range of practical, vocational and sport-based teaching methods to maximise engagement.
- Monitor learner understanding and adapt teaching accordingly.
EHCP Delivery
- Deliver teaching that supports learners to achieve their EHCP outcomes.
- Monitor and evidence progress towards EHCP targets.
- Contribute to Annual Reviews.
- Produce accurate learner progress reports.
- Work collaboratively with parents, carers, local authorities and external professionals.
- Maintain Individual Learning Plans (ILPs).
Assessment
- Carry out initial and diagnostic assessments.
- Complete regular formative and summative assessments.
- Monitor learner progress against qualification criteria.
- Record achievement using college systems.
- Maintain accurate learner files.
- Ensure awarding body requirements are met.
Behaviour Support
- Promote positive behaviour through relationship-based practice.
- Use restorative approaches.
- Support learners to develop self-regulation strategies.
- Encourage attendance, punctuality and engagement.
- Maintain high expectations while recognising individual needs.
Safeguarding
- Promote the welfare of all learners.
- Follow safeguarding and Prevent procedures.

Working with Others
- Work effectively alongside Learning Support Assistants.
- Liaise with therapists and external agencies.
- Build positive relationships with parents and carers.
- Attend staff meetings, CPD and Annual Reviews.
- Support enrichment activities, educational visits and sporting events where appropriate.
Person Specification
Essential Qualifications
- Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training, PGCE or equivalent teaching qualification.
- GCSE Grade 4/C or above in English and Maths.
- Right to work in the UK.
Essential Experience
- Experience teaching learners with SEND.
- Experience supporting learners with EHCPs.
- Experience planning differentiated lessons.
- Experience assessing learner progress.
- Experience managing behaviour positively.
- Experience working with young people aged 16–19.
