About the Role
We are seeking an R&D Tax Assistant Manager/Manager specialising in Engineering to help some of the UK’s most innovative companies identify and secure Research & Development Incentives.
Working with a portfolio of ambitious engineering and manufacturing businesses, you will collaborate with technical directors, design and production engineers and senior stakeholders to analyse complex development projects and assess their eligibility under UK R&D tax legislation. The role involves translating real-world engineering challenges into clear, structured documentation and delivering robust and compliant R&D claims.
This is an opportunity to put genuine engineering knowledge to work in an advisory setting, while helping to shape the growth of an engineering-focused R&D consulting practice.
What You Will Be Doing
- Engage with engineering and manufacturing clients to assess eligibility for R&D tax relief across areas such as advanced manufacturing, automotive, aerospace, electronics, energy and materials development.
- Conduct technical discussions and interviews with design, production and engineering teams to identify qualifying R&D activities.
- Analyse client projects against HMRC R&D legislation, focusing on technological advancement and uncertainty.
- Prepare clear technical narratives and supporting documentation for R&D claims.
- Compile and review qualifying R&D expenditure and supporting financial schedules.
- Support the preparation and submission of claims to HMRC and assist with responses to enquiries where required.
- Build strong client relationships and provide ongoing advisory support regarding R&D eligibility and documentation.
- Mentor and support junior members of the team.
- This is a client-facing role. You will spend meaningful time with the businesses you support, building genuine relationships rather than running a transactional process.
- Lead kick-off meetings and technical interviews with client stakeholders
- Translate complex technical and scientific information into clear, HMRC-compliant narratives
- Act as a trusted point of contact throughout the claims process, keeping clients informed at every stage
- Identify opportunities to add further value across Sedulo's wider service offering
What We Are Looking for:
You will bring genuine engineering insight, and beyond that what matters most is curiosity, commercial awareness, and a commitment to doing things properly:
- Degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Electronic, Chemical, Civil or Manufacturing Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
- Experience supporting or preparing R&D tax relief claims for engineering or manufacturing companies.
- Strong understanding of engineering processes and technologies such as product design and development, prototyping, automation, process improvement or materials innovation.
- Ability to analyse complex technical challenges within engineering and manufacturing environments.
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to translate technical concepts into clear written documentation.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to manage multiple client engagements.
- Experience mentoring or supporting junior staff.
