Assistant Shop & Distribution Manager – Maternity Cover

At St Teresa’s Hospice, every item donated, sold, sorted and distributed helps fund vital care and support for people with life-limiting illnesses and their families. We are looking for an enthusiastic and motivated Assistant Shop & Distribution Manager to join our retail team and help maximise income across our retail operation.
This is an exciting and varied role based at our Warehouse & Superstore, where you will support both the retail and distribution functions, working closely with staff and volunteers to ensure our shops remain successful, welcoming and well-stocked.
Location: St Teresa’s Hospice Superstore & Warehouse, Unit A, McMullen Road, Darlington, DL1 1XY
Hours: 30 hours per week – usual working pattern Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday 09:00-17:00
Fixed Term Contract Duration: This is a fixed term contract to cover maternity leave – post available from 4 August 2026, with expected duration to 31 August 2027.
St Teresa’s Hospice Band 2: £24,887.00 per annum pro rata (£19,909.60 actual salary for 30 hours per week).

Successful applicants are required to provide an enhanced disclosure with a check of the child barred list, to enable supervision of young volunteers. Disclosure expense will be met by St Teresa’s Hospice. All posts are subject to a five-month probationary period.

About the role:
We are a forward thinking, inclusive registered Charity with Inpatient, Outpatient and Hospice at Home services, providing care and support to palliative patients and their families in their own homes and at St Teresa’s Hospice.
Reporting to the Retail Operations Manager, you will:
- Support the day-to-day management of the Superstore.
- Help maximise sales and income through effective merchandising, pricing, shop displays and promotional activities.
- Ensure Gift Aid processes are maintained and utilised effectively.
- Coordinate stock flow, donations, collections and redistribution of goods across the retail estate.
- Support goods-inwards, sorting and distribution activities within the warehouse.
- Recruit, motivate and support volunteers, helping to create a positive and rewarding volunteering experience.
- Ensure high standards of customer service, health and safety, and operational compliance.
- Be an ambassador for St Teresa’s Hospice, promoting our services and values within the local community.
About You:
We are looking for someone with:
- Proven retail experience.
- Experience working directly with members of the public.
- Excellent communication and customer service skills.
- Basic IT skills, including email, word processing and record-keeping systems.
- The ability to motivate and support volunteers with tact and diplomacy.
- Access to transport for travelling between locations and transporting goods where required.
