Role Overview
We are looking for an experienced and motivated Sous Chef to support the Head Chef in the day-to-day running of our busy kitchen.
The Sous Chef will play a key role in maintaining food quality, kitchen organisation, team performance and service standards across all areas of the business.
This is a hands-on leadership role suited to someone who can remain calm under pressure, lead by example and support the wider kitchen team through busy services.
You will be expected to take responsibility for the kitchen in the Head Chef’s absence and help ensure all food is prepared and served to the required standard.
Key Responsibilities
- Support the Head Chef with the daily running of the kitchen
- Lead and supervise the kitchen team during preparation and service
- Take responsibility for the kitchen in the Head Chef’s absence
- Ensure all dishes are prepared, cooked and presented consistently
- Maintain the quality and presentation standards of every section
- Assist with food preparation, cooking and service across all areas of the kitchen
- Organise and manage kitchen sections during busy services
- Support the training and development of chefs and kitchen assistants
- Delegate tasks effectively and ensure all duties are completed
- Monitor portion control, food waste and kitchen efficiency
- Assist with ordering, stock rotation and stock control
- Support menu development, specials and seasonal changes
- Ensure food is labelled, dated, stored and rotated correctly
- Maintain high standards of food hygiene and kitchen cleanliness
- Ensure all allergen procedures are followed accurately
- Complete and monitor food safety, temperature and cleaning records
- Ensure kitchen equipment is used safely and maintained correctly
- Report any equipment faults, staffing issues or operational concerns
- Support the Head Chef with rotas, team communication and performance management
- Help manage service periods to ensure food leaves the kitchen promptly and correctly
- Work closely with the front-of-house management team
- Uphold and reflect The Millhouse Bistro’s standards and values at all times
Skills and Experience
- Previous experience as a Sous Chef or experienced Junior Sous Chef
- Strong knowledge of kitchen operations and food preparation
- Ability to lead and motivate a kitchen team
- Confident working across multiple sections
- Strong organisation and time-management skills
- Able to work efficiently and remain calm under pressure
- Excellent attention to detail and presentation
- Good understanding of food hygiene, allergens and health and safety
- Reliable, punctual and professional
- Strong communication and teamwork skills
- Flexible availability including evenings, weekends and bank holidays

Pay: £35,000.00-£45,000.00 per year
