Job Summary
We are looking for an experienced, multi-skilled Bricklayer / Groundworker to join our team delivering high-quality structural alterations, extensions, and renovation projects for domestic clients. You will handle the critical groundwork and masonry phases that form the structural backbone of every extension and renovation. This is a hands-on role requiring precision, safety awareness, and the ability to work efficiently on residential sites while integrating new work seamlessly with existing structures.
Key Responsibilities
- Groundworks & Site Preparation
- Clear sites, excavate for foundations (strip or raft, as required), and install hardcore/sub-bases.
- Lay and finish concrete foundations, footings, and slabs; install drainage systems, manholes, and service connections.
- Manage backfilling, compaction, and temporary works (shoring where needed).
- Handle structural alterations including structural steelwork and pad foundations for extensions.
- Bricklaying & Structural Masonry
- Lay bricks, blocks, and masonry units to construct cavity walls, extensions, and structural alterations.
- Set out and build in accordance with architectural drawings and structural engineer specifications.
- Tie new extensions into existing buildings, form openings, install lintels/steel beams (in coordination with engineers), and carry out structural repairs.
- Construct or repair brickwork openings in existing, decorative brickwork features, and load-bearing walls.
- Ensure all work meets Building Regulations and maintains structural integrity.
- Read and interpret plans, set out levels, and work to tight tolerances using spirit levels, lasers, and plumb lines.
- Work safely as part of a small team, often alongside other trades on live domestic sites.
- Maintain a clean and tidy site, manage materials, and minimise waste.
- Liaise with neighbours, and building control inspectors on smaller domestic projects.
- Comply with all health & safety requirements (RAMS, PPE, CSCS standards).
Person Specification (Essential)
- Proven experience as a Bricklayer, Groundworker, or combined role on domestic extensions, renovations, and structural alterations (minimum 5 years).
- CSCS card (Blue Skilled Worker).
- Full UK driving licence and company van will be provided.
- Ability to work from drawings and follow structural engineer details.
- Strong understanding of Building Regulations (Structure) and drainage requirements.
- Physically fit and comfortable working in all weather conditions.
Desirable:
- NVQ Level 2/3 in Bricklaying or Groundworks.
- Experience with modern methods (e.g., cavity walling, beam & block floors).
- References from recent extension/renovation projects.

Salary: (CIS/self-employed rate), negotiable depending on experience, location, and proven track record on similar domestic projects.
