Fence Gate Lodge is seeking a professional, dependable and welcoming Receptionist / Night Porter to join the team at our award-winning five-star Boutique hotel.
As one of the main points of contact for our guests, you will help provide a warm welcome, efficient reception service and a safe, comfortable environment throughout their stay. The role combines traditional hotel reception responsibilities with night porter duties, including guest assistance, security checks and preparing the hotel for the following day.
This is a full-time position covering five shifts per week alongside our existing team. The role will include a mixture of reception and night shifts, so applicants must be flexible and comfortable working independently during quieter overnight periods.
Due to the responsibilities involved, applicants must be aged 18 or over.
The Role
Your responsibilities will include:
- Welcoming guests warmly and professionally in line with our five-star standards
- Completing guest check-ins and check-outs
- Processing payments and ensuring guest bills are accurate
- Managing reservations, cancellations and amendments through our hotel system and online booking platforms
- Responding professionally to telephone calls, emails and guest enquiries
- Providing information about the hotel, Fence Gate Inn, local attractions and surrounding area
- Assisting guests with luggage, taxis, directions and general requests
- Coordinating with housekeeping, maintenance and restaurant teams
- Handling guest concerns calmly, professionally and efficiently
- Maintaining accurate reception records and completing shift handovers
- Monitoring the hotel during the night and completing regular security and safety checks
- Ensuring entrances, public areas and access points remain secure
- Responding appropriately to emergencies, disturbances or guest welfare concerns
- Setting up reception and relevant guest areas ready for the morning team
- Completing basic cleaning and tidying duties within reception and public areas when required
- Preparing early departure paperwork, guest bills and morning handover information
- Upholding hotel policies, licensing requirements, health and safety procedures and security standards at all times
About You
The successful candidate will have:
- Previous experience within a hotel, reception, night porter or hospitality role, although training can be provided
- Excellent customer service and communication skills
- Confidence communicating face-to-face, by telephone and through email
- Good literacy, numeracy and basic computer skills
- A professional appearance and high standards of personal presentation
- Strong organisational skills and attention to detail
- The ability to remain calm and make sensible decisions under pressure
- The confidence to work independently during overnight shifts
- A responsible, trustworthy and dependable approach
- A bright, positive attitude and a genuine willingness to help
- Flexibility to work weekends, evenings, nights and bank holidays as required
Experience using hotel property-management systems or online booking platforms would be beneficial but is not essential.
