The Terrace Rooms & Wine is a hotel, wine bar & wine shop by the sea in Ventnor Isle of Wight. We have won multiple awards for wine and have been positively reviewed in all the big national papers and wine magazines. We are the sort of place where you can gain skills relevant on a national or even international level.
Every year thousands of guests stay in our rooms or come to our outdoor terrace to try one of our 1200 wines & enjoy beautiful views & the highest standards of food and service. We are also growing our wholesale & retail trade.
We also run a wine wholesale business on the Isle of Wight with eight restaurants now purchasing their wine from us alone.
We have a small team of five, all of us helping out everywhere from cleaning rooms to serving and selling wine to making simple food items to serving guests and answering emails. We also deliver wine, buy wine, stock take and organise storage. It is a warm, fun little team where we all get on, work hard and enjoy ourselves while putting customers at the heart of what we do.
We are looking for a new team member to join us 25-45 hours per-week. We are really flexible on who this person is and the shifts they work, but there are a few important criteria.
- You absolutely must be able to multi-task and be happy in an environment where there are lots of short and varied tasks rather than one or two constant ones.
- You absolutely must not require micromanaging and be able to understand why jobs are done as they are to find work and complete it to the standard required.
- You will enjoy learning and want to get better and better at what you do. If you link making mistakes with failure you will not enjoy this job because a large part of learning is failing!
- You will have worked in hospitality before but, ideally, you'll also have worked outside it - perhaps in an office or retail.
- You must be a strong nautural communicator who is comfortable speaking politely and warmly with members of the public.
- You must be literate and a competent writer of emails and other day to day business communication and you must be comfortable using technology
- You must be respectful, helpful and able to work at weekends, particularly Sunday (but not every Sunday)
- You must be over 18 as you will need you to sell alcohol unsupervised.
This job will come with lots of learning - be it about wine and wine sales, attention to detail, service stanards, stock management, cooking, Barista coffee, writing, ordering, staff management, emails, social media etc.
Of our existing team, almost everyone has at some point run their own business or been a manager in a small hospitality business. We have a culture of ownership and self-management so if you are used to being given tasks by a more senior person rather than learning to find work and perform it as needed to achieve flawless guest experience you might find things a little confusing.
Almost all shifts finish by 7pm at the latest. Our team work from 25-45 hour weeks depending on their lifestyle. We are very good at releasing rotas early and we ensure all staff pool tips and keep them fairly.
