Job Summary:
To plan, deliver, observe and assess Functional Skills English Speaking,
Listening and Communication (SLC) assessments across varying levels in line
with awarding body requirements. You will ensure that learners demonstrate
the required standards in formal discussions and presentations, and that
assessments are conducted fairly, consistently, and to the required standard.
Key Responsibilities:
Assessment Planning & Delivery:
- Coordinate and deliver SLC assessments for a range of awarding bodies, which can include:
- Two formal group discussions (one prepared, one impromptu)
- One formal individual presentation
- Ensure assessments are set within appropriate contexts that are relevant, meaningful and suitably challenging for the given level.
Learner Support:
- Provide clear guidance on assessment structure and expectations
- Work with the exam team to ensure reasonable adjustments and inclusive practices are in place for learners with additional needs (e.g. BSL users, assistive technology)
Marking & Judgement:
- Observe and assess individual learners against the appropriate assessment criteria
- Make clear, consistent, and evidence-based pass/fail judgments
- Record detailed feedback and specific examples of learner performance using XAMS or equivalent systems
Quality Assurance:
- Participate in internal standardisation and quality assurance meetings
- Ensure assessment standards are applied consistently across all cohorts
- Submit recordings and documentation for external verification as required
Professional Practice:
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of Functional Skills standards and guidance
- Adhere to all policies relating to equality, safeguarding, and assessment integrity
Essential Criteria:
- Qualified to deliver and assess Functional Skills English (e.g. Level 3/4 Certificate in Education and Training, Assessors Award, or equivalent)
- In-depth understanding of Functional Skills English Speaking, Listening and Communication standards at varying levels.
- Experience conducting group-based assessments
- Ability to make reliable, evidence-based judgments
- Strong communication, organisational and digital skills (including assessment systems such as XAMS)
- Experience using a variety of video call platforms such as Zoom
Desirable:
- Experience working with adult learners or learners with additional needs
- Knowledge of the Open Awards or similar awarding organisation’s assessment specifications
Pay: £15.00-£20.00 per hour
Work Location: Hybrid remote in Harrogate (North Yorkshire)
